Project idea

In the year 2030 Crescenzago is an oasis within an urban area, interconnected with its surroundings, designed in a sophisticated and modular way.

Project description

Crescenzago is a district of Milan, not far from the city center. To get there by metro from the city center takes around 20 minutes. Before the rehabilitation of this area it used to be a huge parking lot, but thanks to an atrracive location of Crescenzago, this urban brownfield offers a lot of opportunities.

The project #milano2030 consists of 3 parts. First of them is a reconnection of the neighborhood with the rest of the city and dealing with typical problems of european metropolis: air and noise pollution, high energy consumption and the increase of urban density.The second task is to design an affordable housing in the area and the third task – a renovation of three panel buildings from the 1980s.

In the year 2030 the metro rail and busy road is no longer a barrier, thanks to a new pedestrian bridge that crosses the road and the new neighborhood has 2 centres. The masses of new buildings repeat the existing buildings lines and fit the surroundings. In the new neighborhood there are shops, cafes, restaurants, sports and childcare facilities and underground parking for both, residents and commuters. There are also community spaces like urban gardens and street markets.

The design of the new social housing units is inspired by typical building forms of Crescenzago. Typical building form was cut and split into two masses. The green corridor in between them creates a vertical park that serves as an access to the appartments, the timber structure on the external side creates terraces for the appartments. In the future the material from the building itself and also the terraces can be used to create something even better like bike shelters or market stands.

Technical information

Thanks to the design strategies and high performance products, the buildings have a comfortable and healthy environment. Overheating is prevented by effective shading system and overnight cooling. The heat demand of the new buildings is 8,2 kWh/m2, cooling demand 2,2 kWh/m2. Natural daylight autonomy is more than 70%. Ventilation system with heat recovery provides a good indoor air quality.

The project uses greenery not only as an aesthetic element. In fact the trees and plants contribute to the shading of the buildings, improve the air quality and keep the city’s climate cooler and cleaner.

The panel buildings from 1980s are renovated in a similar way. Timber terraces are added to enlarge the living area of the appartments. Renovation of these buildings improved the indoor comfort and energy efficiency.
