FLORENC21 competition

Dočasná odbavovací hala a zázemí autobusového terminálu Florenc

This architectural competition seeks the best design for a temporary departure hall for the Florenc bus terminal, located in the wider centre of Prague. The aim is not only to provide a high-quality operational solution for the building itself, but also to create a sensitive urban design for its immediate surroundings.

The competition emphasizes connecting the design to a dynamically developing locality and creating a pleasant, functional and lively urban space. The building should reflect the character of the place in which it is located, while also excelling with an appropriate dose of self-confidence, originality and authenticity.

Penta Real Estate, in cooperation with Inspireli, is announcing an international architectural competition aimed at finding the best design for a check-in hall in the Florence area of Prague. The competition is open to architects from around the world and represents a unique opportunity to participate in the creation of a significant public space in the wider city center.

One of the key aspects of the design is sustainability – from the choice of materials to energy efficiency. The maximum permitted built-up area of the building is 1500 m² GFA.

The competition is non-anonymous and open to both foreign and local architects. We welcome innovative approaches, sensitive design, and the courage to think differently about urban space.

PROGRAM

The area of the proposed area is subject to a requirement for an architectural design for a temporary check-in hall and facilities of the Florenc bus terminal, which will include a public part designed for approximately 26,000 people per day, offering waiting areas, catering services, pre-sales offices of transport companies, luggage storage, etc. The non-public part will mainly include the operational and administrative facilities of the facility. The competition also includes a design for smaller structures for roofing individual platforms within the area of interest and a concept for using the space under the arches of the Negrelli Viaduct.

COMPETITION TYPE

A two-phase, non-anonymous, international architectural competition. The first phase of the competition is open and consists of submitting reference projects, team presentations and a libreto. The second phase, which will involve 8 architects or architectural teams, will take place in the form of personal or online presentations. Competition conditions are approved by the Czech Chamber of Architects.

FIRST PHASE – “libreto”

The first phase of the competition is open. For a valid entry, participants must agree to the competition terms and conditions by confirming their participation in the invitation and submitting the completed required documents within the specified deadlines. The digital PDF publication in A3 format should contain information about the architect or team of architects (1xA3), a portfolio of their work (1xA3) and a conceptual design (max. 5 pages). The libreto will be prepared in the form of a short structured text and graphic expression.

SECOND PHASE - design

(situation, floor plans, sections, visualization, facade solution, sustainability concept)
The participants of the 2nd phase of the competition are only the contestants who were invited by the jury after the 1st phase to develop the libreto and submit proposals. The jury will select 8 participants who will present their proposals to the jury during a competition workshop, which is not elimination. This is followed by the incorporation of the jury's comments, submission and final presentation of more elaborate and detailed proposals, on the basis of which the jury will select the winner.

LOCALITIES

The area under development is located near the center of Prague. On the north side, it borders Křižíkova Street, which forms one of the main communication arteries of Karlín. The plot directly borders the Karlín Music Theater building and is part of the Florenc 21 development site, which represents a key element of the extensive urban development of this part of the city. A number of important city points are within walking distance, such as the Museum of the Capital City of Prague, Karlín Square, or the monument on Vítkov Hill. The Florenc site also offers excellent accessibility to public transport - including bus, tram, and metro lines.

TERRITORY

The area of the developed area has a triangular shape, which is defined from the west, north and east by the arms of the Negrelli Viaduct. This area, originally used as the Florenc bus station, has been perceived as a residual space since the 1950s and has served mainly as a warehouse and today functions as a parking lot. It is a strategically located area near the city center, which has potential for cultural and creative use due to its industrial atmosphere and proximity to transport infrastructure.
