Project idea

Intervention to existing buildings in the area of Metaxourgeio in Athens. The definition of the functions was up to the students.

Project description

Our main idea was to approach the residences of the various nationalities of this area with the perspective of uploading it without exclusively its commercialization.
We proposed a complex, combining in it two different functions: traditional dance classrooms of the nationalities which can be found in the area, and the alternative theatre. Through these functions, we are pursuing to bring all the residences closer to each other in order to give them the opportunity to interact.

Technical information

First thought was to make real the continuity of the pavement between the arcades of the buildings next to ours. We succeed that by retreating the existing building of four plot. The variety of different volumes gives importance to the existing ones. By moving the shapes, which are created from the plot itself, we created three volumes, giving to each one a unique role as a function at the plot. The movement of the solids to the center of the plot created a volume of «void». In that way, a peak at the center was created, which is enhanced by the transformation of the void into solid without blocking the continuity. This volume keeps some the attributes of the void, not only by the choice of using the appropriate materials but also by the placement of the smaller – scale volumes in it.
