Project idea

The core idea behind The Bio Hub by KT Works is to create a cultural destination that mirrors the natural world. It is a community-first space where architecture serves as a bridge between wild nature and human connection.
The project is anchored by two distinct experiences: the natural river that carves through the landscape, offering a place for quiet reflection, and the expansive patio, which acts as the hub’s social heart. Adjacent to these is the integrated theatre, a curved architectural shell designed for performances that feel as though they are taking place within the earth itself.

Project description

The Bio Hub is a revolutionary research facility where architecture and ecology merge. A natural river flows directly through the site, serving as a living laboratory for water conservation. The design centers around a sprawling open-air patio, creating a collaborative space where innovation happens in the fresh air.
"Built by nature. Defined by curves."

Technical information

Primary Structure: A hybrid Glulam (Glued Laminated Timber) and steel frame. This allows for the extreme "sinuous" spans and complex curves while maintaining a low carbon footprint.
• Facade System: Custom-milled Vertical Timber Battens (likely Accoya or Western Red Cedar) treated for high UV resistance. These function as a "rainscreen" and provide passive solar shading, reducing cooling loads by up to 30%.
• Roofing Technology: A high-albedo TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) Membrane. The white, reflective surface minimizes the "heat island effect," keeping the interior and the patio areas significantly cooler.
• Water Management: The site utilizes a passive bioswale system to manage runoff before it reaches the natural river. This ensures the building's footprint does not interfere with the river's existing pH or silt levels.
