Project idea

This project is divided into three objectives. The first consists of developing rooms that center on the concept of concealment. where one of the five rooms is at least partially obscured through mediums such as geometry, lighting, or elevation. The second objective aims to prolong the user experience. In a time where architecture is defined by timeliness and efficiency, purposeful design with slowness in mind ensures each room is a space to be savored, not rushed through. Lastly, one must combine the previous concepts and enclose the structure in a dynamic manner.

Project description

This project consists of five rooms. Each room is located on a different elevation, with the entrance being semi-subterranean. The central pattern language of the structure is accordion pleated fans. These elements form the stairways that connect the varying elevations and also serve as barriers that guide people toward corners, conceal certain views, and encourage them to linger rather than move directly to the fifth room. The fifth room is located at the highest level; it is differentiable from the other rooms as it is formed solely by fan forms (as opposed to both fan forms and flat surface areas). The section that forms the ceiling is expanded at the top and slanted downward, making the room imperceptible from a majority of angles.

Technical information

The construction approach to this structure aims to be sustainable and eco-friendly. Materials include Photovoltaic glass, a type of glass that is imbedded with solar cells that generate electricity from sunlight; structural steel, which sustains its quality regardless of the amount of times it is recycled; marble, naturally abundant, durable and highly recyclable.
