Project idea

Reflective Heritage is a contemporary architectural proposal located in Fatimid Cairo, aiming to reconcile modern development with the preservation of historic urban identity. The project reinterprets traditional Islamic architectural principles particularly muqarnas (stalactites) into a modular, three-dimensional spatial system rather than replicating historical forms.
Problem Statement
Historic districts such as Fatimid Cairo face increasing pressure from contemporary development that often results in visual intrusion, loss of identity, and fragmented urban experiences. Many new interventions either imitate heritage superficially or ignore it entirely, creating a conflict between cultural preservation and modern living requirements.

Project description

The project proposes a modular residential and cultural complex composed of repeated spatial units aggregated into a flexible grid. A mirrored and semi-transparent façade reflects surrounding monuments, domes, and urban life, allowing the historic context to visually occupy the building surface rather than compete with it.
Spatial organization follows a clear hierarchy from public to private zones, creating a controlled experiential sequence while maintaining privacy for residents. The project functions as a self-contained environment, reducing pressure on the surrounding historic fabric.

Technical information

Structure: Reinforced concrete slab and core system with steel cantilever beams attached to the concrete slabs, supporting the projecting modular grids. Steel elements are mechanically anchored to the concrete structure to ensure stability and load transfer.
Façade: Laminated reflective glass panels with red-tinted structural framing
Environmental Strategy: Passive shading through deep modular projections, improved natural ventilation via internal voids, and reduced heat gain through reflective surfaces
Program:
Basement: Parking and services
Ground floor: Semi-public cultural spaces
Upper floors: Residential units
Roof: Shared terraces and green spaces
