The Grove: Centre for Research and Environmental Conservation is an architectural initiative located on Maduwa Island, within the ecologically rich Madu Ganga estuary in Balapitiya, Sri Lanka. This project responds to an urgent environmental and socio-economic challenge - the passive underutilization of blue carbon resources in mitigating both ecological degradation and community livelihood crises.
By framing carbon sequestration through wetland ecosystems as a tangible opportunity for community empowerment, The Grove aligns itself with pioneering models such as Mikoko Pamoja (Kenya), where mangrove conservation generates carbon credits to fund local development.
The project aspires to foster awareness, facilitate research, and create mechanisms for local communities and stakeholders to benefit from ecosystem services.
Architecturally, The Grove integrates sustainable design, contextual sensitivity, and community engagement, promoting a symbiotic relationship between people and the landscape of Madu Ganga.
The structure is basically made of timber and galvanized steel. It also incoporates building elements such as cinnamon twigs as pergolas in the Artisan Showcase areas.
