INSPIRELI KASHITU SCHOOL Competition – Design and Build

Daria Bokareva

Project idea

The design solution is a boarding school complex, utilizing the entire proposed site area for the design. The concept divides it into several blocks:
1. The complex of the school itself, including: on the right classes and workshops for secondary school with a separate gym with locker rooms and showers for boys and girls, as well as a room for the coach; on the left classes and workshops for elementary school also with a separate gym; in the middle of the block with a canteen and teachers' rooms, offices for the director and head teachers, conference room and medical center, as well as a multifunctional assembly hall with a block of locker rooms and storage rooms. The whole complex consists of separate blocks of buildings, each of which has organized courtyards, and all of them are connected by a single wooden shading covering for transitions from one block to another. In the middle are 2 recreational amphitheaters for the junior high and high school, with individual storage bins for students organized underneath.
2. a community block for teachers at the bottom left of the site, which includes: a library and computer area, a conference room and classrooms/courtrooms, as well as its own cafeteria-cafeteria. A courtyard is also organized inside.
3. Teacher housing blocks at the top left of the site, organized in groups of repetitive structures, which are complete apartments. Each group has an internal courtyard.
4. Residential blocks for students, which are repetitive groups of buildings with separate courtyards. One block consists of 3 rooms for 2 people, inside which there is a public space for recreation, closets and shared bathrooms with showers. There are also 2 common work rooms in the block.
5. Common sports stadium and grounds on the site
6. All other space on the plot is park and recreational areas

Project description

The proposed architectural solution is intended for use in rural and remote areas of countries with tropical climates where there is a lack of educational infrastructure for adolescents. Specifically, the project is focused on Southern Africa, including Zambia, but can be adapted for other regions with similar socio-economic and climatic conditions such as Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and others.

The project is designed to be implemented in phases and scaled up to allow for adaptation to different levels of funding, local building traditions and available resources. The concept makes extensive use of local building materials (e.g., wood, clay, bricks), labor, and simple construction techniques, ensuring sustainability, maintainability, and affordability of the facilities.

The architectural structure of the campus is based on a modular approach and division into blocks with courtyards, which contributes to a comfortable, safe and psychologically supportive environment. Shaded wooden pavements between buildings provide protection from sun and rain, making it easy to move around the campus throughout the day and creating additional space for informal socializing and studying.

Technical information

The design solution involves the use of materials such as:
1. ICEB for the main load-bearing walls of classrooms, canteen and administrative rooms of the school, public area for teachers, as well as residential blocks for students and teachers.
2. Reinforced concrete columns for the load-bearing structures of large-span spaces such as gymnasiums and assembly hall, camouflaged in ICEB walls.
3. Wooden beam rafters for pitched roofs, as well as wooden beams and wooden supports for the flat roof, which is the connecting shading cover between the rooms of the school complex.
4. It is proposed to use straw for roofing of residential units, and for public buildings - shingles and wooden boards or fabric for shading coverings.
