Brief project description:
The multi-story residential building project is designed for the city of Arkhangelsk. The building is a single-section structure with a height of 17 stories. The first floor is dedicated to infrastructure, housing entrance groups and retail stores. The second floor serves as a technical level. From the second to the seventeenth floor, every three floors are combined by an atrium with modular blocks that can be transformed for various use scenarios. The uppermost atrium is unheated.
Location:
The project location is the city of Arkhangelsk. It is a city in Russia and ranks fifth in population within the Northwestern Federal District. It is situated at the mouth of the Northern Dvina River, approximately 30–35 kilometers from where it flows into the White Sea. Arkhangelsk serves as the administrative center of Arkhangelsk Oblast and the Primorsky Municipal District. It is a city of regional significance and constitutes the municipal entity known as the City of Arkhangelsk, which has the status of an urban district. Arkhangelsk is one of the major cities in the north of European Russia. As of 2024, its population is 296,665.
Project Objective:
The goal of the project is to develop an architectural solution that takes into account the specific features of social interaction among residents of a multi-apartment structure. The design should also be environmentally friendly and considerate of the surrounding context.
Novelty and Practical Value:
The project’s innovation and practical significance lie in the study of social contact patterns within a medium-rise residential structure.
Theoretical Foundation, Idea, and Concept of the Experimental Project:
The design proposes an atrium-type building with a variety of apartment layouts. The residential building consists of a single section with 17 stories, 14 of which are partially residential. The first floor is allocated to infrastructure, and the second floor serves as a technical level. The building includes a warm atrium. It has modular blocks that can be transformed for various use scenarios: active play, static stage, plaza and labyrinth.
All residents have access to shared green spaces located within the atriums. These elements are intended to encourage interaction among neighbors and promote communal activities. Each apartment unit features a clear separation between public and private areas.
The main functional zones of the residential building include: a warm atrium, the residential area, public infrastructure on the first floor, a technical floor, and service communications. The atrium serves as a key element that shapes the building’s appearance and defines the architectural design of its facades.
Structural System of the Building:
The building features a combined structural system, consisting of columns (400×400 mm) and load-bearing external and internal walls. The floor structure is made up of slabs and beams. The foundation is a pile foundation, as the building is located in the Far North region.
Materials of Load-Bearing Structures:
The columns are made of reinforced concrete, the beams are reinforced concrete with a height of 400 mm, and the floor slabs are also made of reinforced concrete.
The multi-story residential building is designed for the city of Arkhangelsk. The city is located in the Far North region of Russia, though permafrost is not present in this area.
The building includes a technical floor with a height of 3 meters, located in the 2th floor.
The first floor serves as an infrastructure level, housing a café and a retail store. The residential building consists of a single section and has a total height of 17 stories.
