Public urban space improvement project: Sobchak Square

Ksenia Sergeeva

Project idea

An important condition was to maintain a balance of permeable and impermeable coatings, while leaving most of the space open. In addition, it was necessary to take into account the fact that the facade of the Kirov House of Culture is an important dominant feature from any viewpoint. It was also necessary to provide wind protection due to the urban planning features of the location, to create a lot of shady spaces to avoid the scorching sun. The main goal is to connect a large area with the nearby Vasileostrovets park to form a green
corridor.

Project description

The fundamental technique was the principle of monopodding. From an economic point of view, it is advantageous to use this technique in projects, since caring for a homogeneous group of plants is much easier. Moreover, the plants bloom at the same time, creating an effect of abundant flowering. In this way, you can create certain zones that define your own color and textures. The project consists of the following functional and landscape areas: coworking area, main square, playground, quiet recreation area, restaurant area, spruce thickets, moss islands and willow houses.

Technical information

Natural stones and artificial stones that made of durable plastic are used for decoration. Street lamps of various sizes (450 mm, 900 mm, 5000 mm) are made of metal. The barrel grilles are made of concrete. For the barrel grilles: a crushed stone base is used, the paving base and the tile covering are separated from the barrel grilles by a concrete base B20.
