Project idea

Scenography project for a fashion show dedicated to the "Architectonics" collection by Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen. The Architectonics collection is inspired by visionary architecture of floating cities and the concept of bionic design. The sixteen looks that make up the entire collection give tangible form to the principles of parametric architecture, demonstrating fluidity, fragmentation, and vibrant, dynamic patterns. The shape and placement of the stage evoke the image of an island and refer to Iris van Herpen’s inspiration — the Oceanix floating city project by Bjarke Ingels. The runway is not connected to the audience in any way; the only path leading to it is an inclined platform in the shape of a cut-out circle. The central, island-like stage and the surrounding space emphasize a sense of detachment from reality and entry into a futuristic world of fashion. The scenography acts as a subtle yet dynamic background, enhancing the innovative character of the garments. It brings the collection’s story to life, becoming a part of van Herpen’s visionary world.

Project description

The scenography features a central, island-like stage isolated from the audience by a circular wall that also enhances acoustics. The audience seating is arranged in a circular formation with gradually rising tiers, providing optimal viewing angles for all guests. The platform is directly connected to the empty space within the suspended construction above the stage. Thanks to its white color and strategic lighting, the entire structure stands out against the dark surroundings. A gently sloped platform shaped like a cut-out circle serves as the only access to the stage, ensuring safe and smooth movement for the models. Responding to the geometry of the platform are flat, suspended rings matching the width of the audience area, which visually frame and complete the space. Descending from a single shared point in rhythmically increasing intervals, they define the entrance zone and the boundaries of the audience area. These forms create an abstract atmosphere within the show space and convey the sense of entering another world, while their dark color ensures they do not distract from the centrally located stage. The show is planned to last 15 minutes, during which the models will walk individually around the inclined platform, finally descending onto the stage together to allow a detailed view of all the looks. The color palette of the scenography ties in with the tones of the collection, serving as a subtle background for the striking and varied garments.

Technical information

The project is tailored specifically to Exhibition Hall 3A at the Poznań International Fair, using available ceiling suspension points for the overhead circular elements. The round walls are constructed to provide both sound insulation and a tactile visual barrier from the surrounding trade fair environment. The sloped platform is engineered with a gradually increasing thickness for structural stability, allowing models to walk safely. Lighting is carefully arranged to highlight the white stage and suspended elements, contrasting sharply with the dark surroundings. Seating tiers are designed to ensure clear sightlines and comfort for all attendees, accommodating up to 510 people.
