Project idea

The idea of this project is to utilize the unique intersection of various transportation modes in the Népliget area to create a multifunctional transit hub. This hub will improve connectivity by establishing a new railway stop on the southern railway line, integrated with the metro system through green corridors. The aim is to encourage local residents and commuters to use public transportation by providing efficient transfer points and sufficient parking facilities for park-and-ride users. This strategy will reduce vehicular traffic on Üllői Road and in the city center, contributing to a more sustainable urban environment. Additionally, elevating the railway line will reconnect divided urban areas, making them accessible and safe for pedestrians and cyclists. The project also includes new commercial and community spaces that respond to the anticipated increase in transit users and local population growth.

Project description

This project consists of several interconnected components. The main feature is the establishment of a new station on the southern railway line, designed as an elevated structure to function as a bridge linking previously separated urban zones. Two green corridors will connect this station to the metro, providing pleasant and safe pedestrian and bicycle routes. To support the shift from car to public transit, a large park-and-ride parking area will be developed. Commercial development includes a new multi-story shopping center on the former Lidl site in Kőbánya, and a market street with a local producer’s market in Ferencváros, honoring the legacy of the historic Ecseri market. The project also envisions a new park between emerging co-housing apartment buildings in Ferencváros, offering sport and recreational facilities for residents and visitors, including rest and lodging options for travelers and athletes.

Technical information

The railway line will be elevated on structural supports, creating a bridge-like form that allows uninterrupted pedestrian and cyclist movement underneath. The elevated construction will use durable materials designed to minimize noise and vibration impact on the surroundings. The new station will feature accessible platforms, waiting areas, and integration points for buses and bicycles. The green corridors will consist of landscaped pathways with sustainable drainage and lighting systems. The park-and-ride parking area will accommodate a significant number of vehicles with efficient entry and exit flows to prevent congestion. The new commercial buildings will be constructed with modern multi-story reinforced concrete and steel frameworks, incorporating energy-efficient systems and sustainable design principles. The public park will include sports fields, seating areas, and small-scale lodging facilities, designed with a focus on accessibility and environmental sensitivity.
