Project idea

The aim was to create a stop on pilgrimate road Via Czechia in the central part of the Czech republic. The task was to create a monastery with a brewery and accomodation for pilgrims. In the past, the castle served as a Benedictine monastery.

Project description

The grounds are designed as gardens, divided by a stream into public areas and private sections reserved for the monastery. In the northern part, there is a pavilion for pilgrims with access to the castle’s game preserve. The southern section contains the monastery gardens and a pedestrian path leading to the lower part of the village.

On the eastern side, there is a parking area for deliveries and visitors.

Access to the monastery complex is from the north, via small bridges crossing a lake, The Porta Sacra, beyond which the church tower with its bell comes into view. Just past the gate, one finds the entrance to the church as well as the gateway to the monastery.

To the left, there is a brewery where visitors can observe the beer-making process. To the right, accommodation is provided for pilgrims. The space between the lodging and the church is dedicated to community activities organized by the monastery and the local village.

The prominent church features a main entrance for visitors from the courtyard, while the monks enter through the cloister. The sacristy is located beneath the tower, in the underground level.

The altar is centrally positioned, inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and other Renaissance churches.

Technical information

The structural system of the buildings is based on load-bearing walls and exposed concrete. The cloister is designed as a steel structure covered with glass. The church also features a steel structural system, utilizing truss beams covered with glass panels that allow for the regulation of light and thermal radiation.

Inside the tower is a bell that calls people from the surrounding area.
