Project idea

re-function/re-design the warehouse buildings in the historic town of
Famagusta into “A Hub/Local/Meeting Point project to serve Chamber of Civil Engineers in Cyprus, that will serve for a contemporary meeting
point of the selected chamber, while being respectful to the architectural features and physical condition of
the historic building. While refunctioning the given building as “A HUB”

Project description

In this design, space is born from three-dimensional vectors—intangible forces such as tension, compression, torsion, shear, and bending—that shape both structure and experience. A parametric mesh responds dynamically to these forces, evolving into an organic form that defines the interior. This contemporary intervention stands in deliberate contrast to the building’s historic masonry, yet the two coexist in a careful balance. The structural logic of the new elements complements the enduring textures of the past, achieving a symbiosis where movement and pressure generate both fluidity and function.

Given that the building will serve as a hub for the Chamber of Civil Engineers, these expressive framing elements carry particular significance—celebrating the very principles of engineering that shape the built environment.

Technical information

The original historical buildings are constructed from locally sourced masonry blocks, reflecting the character of the region. Their heritage value presents both a challenge and an opportunity—to design with minimal intervention and near-zero impact on the existing fabric. In response, the new spatial volumes are formed using exposed stainless steel frames paired with lightweight composite aluminum panels. This shell structure not only defines the new spaces but also provides subtle structural support for the added mezzanine level, achieving a harmonious integration with the historic architecture.
