The Grand Ateliers area is already an integral part of the urban layout of Villefontaine. It is a place where people can meet, relax and have fun — for example, by flying kites. But is its potential really being realised? Or not? Or maybe it is? Can this question even be answered unequivocally?
Our aim was to create an environment that would better serve the school's students and staff, as well as the local residents, while preserving the site's natural character. We didn't want to artificially define or limit it, nor did we want to bind it with precise rules about what, when and how one should do things there.
Activities, exhibitions and prototypes would then naturally emerge around local centres. These are places where life is shaped by the users themselves. Could there be an exhibition by the pond? Or a weekend fair in front of a café? That's up to them.

Území Grand Ateliers je již pevnou součástí městského organismu Villefontaine. Slouží jako místo setkávání, odpočinku a zábavy – třeba pro pouštění létajících draků. Ale je jeho potenciál skutečně naplno využit? Ne? Možná? Lze na tuto otázku vůbec jednoznačně odpovědět?
Naším cílem bylo vytvořit prostředí, které by lépe sloužilo jak studentům a pracovníkům školy, tak i místním obyvatelům, a přitom
zachovalo přirozený ráz lokality. Nechtěli jsme ji uměle definovat ani omezovat – nesvazovat ji přesnými pravidly, co, kdy a jak zde má kdo dělat.
Aktivity, výstavy a prototypy by tak přirozeně vznikaly kolem lokálních center – míst, kde život formují sami uživatelé. Bude to výstava u rybníka? Nebo víkendový jarmark před kavárnou? To už záleží na nich.

Our proposal only clearly defines the basic elements: accommodation and laboratory buildings, main pedestrian routes, and local centres. The most important thing is not a fixed structure, but the possibility of choice. We want users to be able to adapt the environment to their needs — to add to it, remove parts of it, or even transform it completely.
The path will take you through a narrow path to the insect hotel, or you could choose to bypass several prototypes and reach the same point through a newly created path. This is not a foregone conclusion. Our aim was not to be strictly prescriptive, but rather to allow for organic development.
This approach will ensure the territory is fully functional even without the immediate presence of prototypes. Local green belts will create dozens of diverse zones that will gradually evolve to meet the natural needs of their users.
The small buildings of the local centres and the main buildings of the complex will fit naturally into the surrounding urban network. The plots designated for the prototypes are not strictly regular squares, but unique spaces that will influence the design of the prototypes themselves, including their location in relation to roads and their shape and orientation. At the same time, the form, height or size of these prototypes can retroactively influence and naturally shape the development of the surrounding area.

Náš návrh jasně definuje pouze základní prvky – budovy ubytování a laboratoří, hlavní pěší tahy a lokální centra. To nejdůležitější
ale není pevná struktura, nýbrž možnost volby. Chceme, aby si uživatelé mohli prostředí přizpůsobit podle svých potřeb – doplnit ho, odebrat jeho části nebo ho zcela proměnit.
Povede cesta úzkou pěšinkou k hmyzímu hotelu, nebo se člověk
rozhodne obejít několik prototypů a dojít k témuž bodu nově vzniklou stezkou? To není předem dané. Naším cílem nebylo přísně určovat, ale naopak nabídnout prostor pro organický vývoj.
Díky tomuto přístupu bude území plně funkční i bez okamžité přítomnosti prototypů. Lokální pásy zeleně vytvoří desítky rozmanitých zón, které se budou postupně měnit a přizpůsobovat přirozeným potřebám svých uživatelů. Drobné objekty lokálních center i hlavní budovy areálu přirozeně zapadnou do okolní městské sítě. Parcely určené pro prototypy nejsou striktně pravidelnými čtverci, ale unikátními prostory, které mohou ovlivnit samotný návrh prototypů – jejich umístění vůči cestám, tvar či orientaci. Zároveň mohou tyto prototypy svou formou, výškou nebo rozlohou zpětně ovlivnit rozvoj okolního území a přirozeně jej formovat

Technical information

The load-bearing frames of the accommodation wings consist of two slender LVL columns, with an additional square-section LVL column inserted between them.
This design ensures stability while maintaining an elegant appearance.
In the longitudinal direction, the frames are stiffened by CLT panels sheathing the load-bearing structure.
The end walls of the accommodation blocks are alsomade of load-bearing CLT panels.

Nosné rámy ubytovacích křídel jsou tvořeny dvěma subtilními LVL sloupy, mezi něž je vložen LVL sloup čtvercového průřezu. Řešení umožňuje zajistit stabilitu rámu a přitom rám působí subtilně. V podélném směru rámy jsou ztuženy CLT panely, jež oplášťují nosnou konstrukci. Čelní stěny ubytovacích křídel jsou řešeny nosnými stěnovými CLT panely.
