Project idea

The market hall for the city of Heilbronn is based on the concept of giving the city centre a new, green space. At the same time, a functional market hall for the sale of fresh, regional products and gastronomy is to be created on the square.
I was inspired by the MFO Park in Zurich, an unconventional vertical park.
For my design, I drew on the characteristics and advantages of the MFO Park and combined them with the concept of a market hall.
The materiality and design of the hall complement the effect of the green cladding in order to exploit the advantages of the plants from a climatic, structural and aesthetic point of view.
This enhances the quality of the indoor and outdoor spaces.
The market hall is located on the western edge of the square, creating a new public space.
The market hall borders the square to the west and provides shade. The square is a kind of extension of the pedestrian zone from the market square and Rathausgasse.
This square is designed with seating areas and green spaces. The market hall‘s restaurants also use the outdoor area for outdoor dining during the summer months.

Project description

The design is based on two cubes, with a smaller closed cube located inside the outer, open cube.
The outer cube is open at the front and its structure is dissolved into a steel skeleton. It mainly serves as a trellis for a selection of different climbing plants.
The plants grow around the entire building and provide natural shade.
The smaller cube, constructed with a wooden skeleton, contains the market hall. The architecture is simple and minimalist, which is achieved, for example, by the full-surface façade made of corrugated sheet systems. This translucent façade allows plenty of daylight into the interior, and the exterior begins to merge with the interior. For example, the climbing plants are projected inside through the play of shadows and their colour.
Thus, both the exterior and interior spaces benefit from the ‘green’ hall.

In addition to the market hall, there is an independently operated roof terrace with a café and bar on the roof of the market hall. This roof terrace offers a feeling of security thanks to the green roof and, at a height of approx. 10 m, also offers a view over the city to the north-west.
The terrace is accessible via stairs running between the inner hall and the trellis, and via a lift.
