Project idea

The proposed project aims to create a multifunctional, semi-open pavilion in the historic center of Eger that responds to the everyday needs of local residents while offering space for diverse forms of community and cultural activity. During the morning hours, the pavilion functions as a marketplace for local farmers and antique vendors. In the afternoon and evening, the same space transforms into a venue for open-air cinema and theatrical performances or restaurant and bar, supporting a vibrant cultural life.

The main objectives of the project include strengthening urban community engagement, supporting the local economy, and showcasing Eger’s cultural diversity. Architecturally, the pavilion is designed to be flexible, multifunctional use, while fitting sensitively into the historic urban fabric of Eger. At its core, the project promotes openness, activity, and a strengthened local identity.

Project description

The multifunctional pavilion is envisioned as a flexible, modular, and partially open structure capable of accommodating a range of community functions throughout the day. The project scope includes:

-Urban integration of the site, with special consideration to Eger’s historic urban fabric and pedestrian circulation.

-Architectural and structural design of the pavilion, enabling a seamless transition between daytime market use and evening cultural functions.

-Design of functional zones, including vendor stalls, seating areas, a mobile stage, and service units (e.g. lighting, sound system, shading, storage).

-Management of temporal transitions, such as daily reconfiguration and seasonal adaptability.

-Implementation of environmentally conscious solutions, such as natural ventilation, passive shading and use of recycled materials.

-Community involvement in certain phases of design and operation to ensure the pavilion functions as a true civic space.

Technical information

The pavilion’s structural system is made of CLT (cross-laminated timber) columns and beams, supporting translucent, colorful textile canopies for shading. The service blocks are built from CLT panels, insulated with recycled textile materials and clad in colorful trapezoidal metal sheets. The system is modular and easily reconfigurable to support a range of uses from markets to theater and cinema events. The structure is sustainable and weather-resistant.
