Project idea

This project aims to develop a state-of-the-art convention centre in Chennai, focusing on sustainability, architectural functionality, and innovative steel construction. The design seeks to respond to the growing pressures on urban land through efficient spatial planning and high-rise building integration.

Project description

Zoning & Planning: The site is strategically zoned into public, semi-public, and service zones to ensure seamless circulation, accessibility, and security. A central spine connects key functional spaces like the convention hall, exhibition areas, and auditorium.

Structural Approach: Steel is used as the primary material to enable large spans, flexible interiors, and rapid construction. The structural system supports column-free spaces ideal for large gatherings and exhibitions.

Climatic Response: Passive design strategies like natural ventilation, solar shading, and green roofing systems enhance energy efficiency. The orientation and massing are optimized for Chennai’s climate.

Sustainability: Rainwater harvesting, solar panels, and energy-efficient lighting systems are integrated to reduce environmental impact.

User Experience: The design focuses on user comfort through well-planned foyers, lounges, cafeterias, and landscaped breakout spaces, offering a blend of functionality and experience.

Technology Integration: BIM tools and 3D modeling are used for visualization, coordination, and detailed service integration to enhance design accuracy and presentation.

Technical information

Material Used:
The primary framework of the convention centre is composed of mild steel (MS) sections, specifically:
I-sections and box sections for columns and beams
Space frame steel trusses for large-span roofing
Galvanized steel for exterior members to resist corrosion

Passive Design Response to Chennai’s Climate

Orientation: Building is oriented to minimize east-west exposure and capture prevailing winds
Courtyards and green buffers: Reduce urban heat island effect and promote natural cooling
Rainwater Harvesting & Permeable Surfaces: Manage monsoon runoff and recharge groundwater
