Project Concept — “Majlis Noir” Bar

Modern cities often lack spaces that truly foster human connection. In a fast-paced urban lifestyle, people are increasingly in need of places where they can not only spend time but also rest their minds, recharge emotionally, and feel inspired by the atmosphere. The idea for the “Majlis Noir” project emerged in response to this growing need — to create a new cultural space that blends functionality, comfort, and expressive interior design.

The project name holds the essence of its concept: Majlis is a traditional gathering space in many Arab cultures — a place where people come together to converse, share ideas, and spend quality time. The word itself translates from Arabic as “a place to sit.” Drawing inspiration from this cultural tradition, the project reimagines the idea of a majlis within the context of a contemporary European city — transforming it into a refined, modern bar.

“Majlis Noir” is conceived as a dim, intimate interior that emphasizes privacy, reflection, and respect for personal space. The use of dark tones helps to create a sense of enclosure and calm, while subtle highlights — through furniture, lighting, and textures — guide attention and mood. The design invites guests to experience quiet conversation, the flavor of a well-crafted drink, and the calming ambiance of an emotionally intelligent environment.

Project Goals
• To create not just a bar, but a new meeting point for residents and visitors — a space for conversation, connection, relaxation, or creative work.
• To use interior design as a tool for emotional impact, employing light, color, texture, and layout as storytelling elements.
• To reinterpret a cultural tradition with a modern architectural language, making it relevant and attractive for a diverse urban audience.

Cultural & Social Relevance

“Majlis Noir” is more than just an interior project — it’s a dialogue between cultures. Eastern traditions are blended with contemporary minimalism to form a unique identity that speaks both to history and to the future. The space welcomes a wide variety of people — from creative youth to professionals — united by their appreciation of atmosphere, aesthetics, and meaningful experiences.

Inspirations
• Traditional Eastern majlis and tea houses
• Noir cinema aesthetics: contrast of light and shadow, intimate settings
• Principles of biophilic design — natural materials, warm indirect lighting
• Modern European art bars and boutique interiors

Project description

Scope of the Project Solution

The interior design of “Majlis Noir” Bar consists of the following core areas and functional components, each carefully considered in terms of spatial layout, guest experience, and visual identity:

1. Main Area — General Seating Zone

The central area of the project is entirely dedicated to flexible seating, designed to facilitate informal gatherings and social interaction. Key features include:
• A variety of seating options arranged throughout the space to maximize usability
• Tables and chairs distributed to accommodate individuals, couples, or groups
• A cohesive design language uniting the entire area, ensuring fluid movement and visual continuity

2. VIP Zone

A designated section of the main area is visually and functionally distinguished as a VIP zone, centered around sofa groupings that provide added comfort and privacy. Characteristics include:
• Soft upholstered sofas arranged to create a more exclusive and intimate atmosphere
• Subtle zoning using materials, lighting, and furniture layout to separate this space from general seating
• Enhanced details and finishes to emphasize the elevated status of this area (e.g., premium fabrics or custom lighting)

3. Sanitary Block (including accessible toilet)

This functional zone serves all visitors and is designed to meet modern standards:
• Clean, minimalist sanitary equipment
• One fully accessible restroom for guests with limited mobility
• Discreet lighting and logical spatial positioning within the plan

4. Decorative and Emotional Elements

Atmosphere plays a vital role in the concept of Majlis Noir. The space is enriched with elements that create mood and identity:
• A suspended ceiling with multi-level lighting, creating depth and ambient variation
• Wall textures and décor inspired by Eastern aesthetics and noir visual themes
• Use of indoor greenery and soft, natural materials in line with biophilic design principles

Technical information

The “Majlis Noir” project is a modern interior design concept developed as part of a student coursework at the Technical University of Moldova. The space reinterprets the traditional Eastern majlis as a contemporary bar that combines comfort, aesthetic depth, and functional zoning.

The interior includes a main seating area with various configurations, a more secluded VIP zone with sofa groups, and a sanitary block with accessible features. The overall ceiling height is 3.2 meters, with suspended ceilings used for lighting and spatial articulation.

Construction elements include plasterboard partitions of different thicknesses (100–200 mm), decorative cladding on columns, and 2.5 m high doors. Flooring materials vary by zone: epoxy coating, ceramic tiles, and natural stone.

The lighting system combines chandeliers, recessed LED fixtures, and accent lighting integrated into ceilings and floors. Electrical outlets and switches are placed at multiple ergonomic heights, including LED-specific controls and motion sensors in restrooms.

Furnishing includes a mix of bar stools, sofas, custom tables, and a central bar counter, all selected to enhance comfort, flexibility, and the project’s refined identity.
