The idea for Buli: Cyberbully Prevention and Protection Center was born out of a growing national concern about the rising cases of cyberbullying in Malaysia. Alarmingly, Malaysia ranks sixth globally and second in Asia for reported cyberbullying cases, with three out of ten young Malaysians having fallen victim. Social media platforms, while designed for communication and connection, have become breeding grounds for anonymous harassment and online abuse. This project responds to the urgent need for a dedicated space that not only supports victims but also educates the public about the psychological and emotional harm caused by cyberbullying. The goal is to provide a safe haven where victims can be heard, supported, and guided, while also spreading awareness and instilling responsible digital behaviour among the public.
Buli is envisioned as a comprehensive, interactive center that combines architecture, technology, and emotional healing to combat the effects of cyberbullying. In collaboration with key organizations such as UNICEF Malaysia, Befrienders, MCMC, and KKMM, the center is designed to offer counselling, emotional support, digital education, and interactive awareness programs. The interior spaces are purposefully curated to guide visitors through a journey of understanding featuring immersive exhibits, therapy rooms, and areas for engagement with professionals. The blue-themed interior, inspired by its therapeutic qualities, promotes calmness and healing. Key features like the Counselling Tower use light therapy, projecting positive words and soft blue light to uplift the mood of users. The integration of AI, machine learning, and robotic process automation further enhances the center’s role in monitoring emotional cues, triggering personalized support, and ensuring that no victim suffers in silence.
Sustainability and innovation form the backbone of the project’s technical framework. The main material used is recycled stainless steel, chosen for its environmental responsibility, strength, and durability. This is complemented by elements of concrete, glass, and timber to create a warm and dynamic interior experience. Lighting plays a crucial therapeutic role ,specifically through the use of blue light at strategic locations like the Counselling Tower to help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. The application of phototherapy in these spaces reflects research-backed methods of mood enhancement. Moreover, the project’s technological backbone includes smart systems driven by artificial intelligence and behavioral analytics to provide real-time engagement and support for users. This approach ensures Buli is not just a building, but a living system—adaptive, responsive, and deeply human in its mission to prevent, protect, and empower.
