This project envisions a spiritual and architectural journey inspired by the philosophy and life of Baul Shah Abdul Karim — one of Bangladesh's most profound mystic musicians and thinkers. Rooted in his belief that "The Creator is not in the outer world, but within the human being and in nature," the complex becomes more than just a memorial; it becomes a pathway to self-discovery.
The architectural concept is based on an inward journey — moving symbolically from the external world to the inner self. Visitors gradually transition through spaces that evoke the elements of earth, water, sound, silence, and finally light — reflecting the Baul idea of shedding material illusions to find divine truth within.
Set in a rural riverside context, the project celebrates vernacular materials, folk wisdom, and natural rhythms, while allowing architecture to dissolve into music, memory, and meaning.
This is not a monument.
It is a living resonance of a soul who sang the eternal song of love, humanity, and divine presence within all.
FINDINGS
01. Due to the presence of the Kalni River on the eastern side of the site, it remains at risk of flooding every year.
02. Generally, for about 6–7 months (from May to October), the entire area remains submerged in water.
03. During floods, the maximum flood level reaches 2 feet 6 inches.
04. During the monsoon and most of the year, people use boats for transportation, which makes the area quite inaccessible.
05. During the dry season, local transport such as CNGs, rickshaws, and vans can operate, but cars cannot pass due to the narrow roads.
06. The fair is held in a disorganized way each year, as the site lacks proper planning and infrastructure.
07. The two ponds on the site have been rendered unusable by the local people.
08. There are no facilities for visitors to stay overnight.
AIM & OBJECTIVE
01. The grave will be uncovered from the house and preserved, following the lyrics of the song, so visitors can feel its emotion.
02. The house that holds memories of his life will be properly preserved. Keeping the original structure intact, the interior will be arranged with his belongings, musical instruments, photos, and documents.
03. A small but immersive museum will be established within his homestead, where visitors can explore his life, creations, and philosophy.
04. Since the water level in the project area is unpredictable, elevated foundations will be used to prevent damage from floods or waterlogging.
05. An interactive audio-visual museum will be created using his songs, interviews, and more—where visitors can hear his voice, watch videos, and explore his lyrics.
06. A library will be established and kept open to all. In addition, all his writings, recordings, diaries, photographs, and personal letters will be digitally scanned to create an archive, which will also be accessible to researchers.
07. The most emotional part of this project is his dream music school. It will offer singing classes, instrument lessons, and a blend of folk and modern music for children and teenagers.
08. Introduce a central spine to organize and connect the site's functions along its axis, ensuring efficient circulation, and construct a ghat to enhance accessibility to the site.
