Project idea

Makan-Makan is more than just a food center , it’s a cultural movement that aims to bring Malaysians and tourists closer to the heart of our country: its food. Inspired by the growing concern that many of Malaysia’s traditional dishes are slowly being forgotten, this project was born to revive and protect our diverse culinary heritage. With the rapid pace of modernization, fast food chains, and changing lifestyles, younger generations are losing touch with the flavors that once defined their roots. Makan-Makan offers a solution, a space where food becomes a bridge between generations, races, and cultures, celebrating the stories, techniques, and identity behind every dish.

Project description

At its core, Makan-Makan is a gastronomy and culinary cultural hub that welcomes both locals and foreigners to explore the richness of Malaysian cuisine. Visitors can enjoy authentic dishes from various ethnic backgrounds (Malay, Chinese, Indian and more ) in a lively, festive atmosphere. But it doesn’t stop there. The hub also offers hands-on cooking classes, where people can learn to prepare traditional meals while understanding the history and cultural meaning behind them. It becomes a space for families to bond, communities to connect, and tourists to gain a deeper appreciation for Malaysia’s food culture. By actively engaging people in the process, Makan-Makan preserves more than recipes, it keeps stories, identities, and traditions alive.

Technical information

The design of Makan-Makan blends tradition with sustainability. Inspired by the details of traditional Malay architecture, the building incorporates familiar elements such as roof ornaments and intricate wood carvings ,not just as decoration, but as a way to honor craftsmanship and heritage. Materials like bamboo and timber are chosen for their natural cooling properties and eco-friendliness, aligning with the project's goal of creating a comfortable yet environmentally responsible space. The color scheme is intentionally vibrant , bold reds, yellows, and greens , evoking the celebratory spirit of Malaysian culture. Together, the design and layout encourage interaction, discovery, and appreciation of different food cultures under one roof, turning the space into a living expression of Malaysia’s diverse identity.
