"The Change-Maker" A Center for Social Entrepreneurship

Project idea

The urban design approach starts with a question “are our cities built for youth?”
To generate a solution the intention of the project came as safeguard and foster a sustainable society for future generation.

Project description

This particular project is an outcome of the Urban design project themed as “safeguard and foster a sustainable society for future generation”. The project objective is to provide opportunities for social entrepreneurship to generate economic empowerment for youth and considering youth as change agents for societal impact.
To develop the project, youth, community and local industries concerned as major elements in the context of Nugegoda and project integrates these three elements through social enterprising.
Further, beside the commuting youth population, there is 25% youth population in the area and 50% of people are unemployed. So, my primary user is school dropouts and unemployed youth in the neighborhood and commuting youth who seeks secondary education. Secondary user is unemployed adults mostly from the marginalized communities. Through the project, they can become a young entrepreneur, designer or an artisan.
The application of social enterprising through the project is about directing youth to gain a sustainable entrepreneurship skill through strategically using the existing resources in the context. It is about using waste materials and byproducts as raw materials of the selected industries to produced upcycled products through social enterprising. Here contemporary crafts, artefacts and commodities are concerned.
The project is named as “The Change-Maker”: A center for social entrepreneurship. A changemaker is a someone who is taking creative action to solve a social problem. “changemaker” provides a roadmap for making transformative difference. Youth are the changemakers of the future.
So, the project program is based on these core functions. Education, Incubation, Realization, Technology and Inclusivity.

Technical information

Since the project related to upcycled materials, the building should also express the potential of upcycling. Therefore, Building façade done with different woven upcycled material (Textile, Polythene) panels. Using reclaimed timber and brick for all the constructions in the design.
