Project idea

The fundamental idea of the project is to generate a new park in the city of Beirut, acting as a transition between the city and the Mediterranean Sea. In addition to this park, the full program includes certain functional extensions to the original shape of the port, as well as a cultural and memorial building to remember the events of the explosion in 2020.

Project description

The project consists of a series of functional parts, all connected to each other, generating a new urban system on the North Beirut waterfront. This includes:
First, the new operational port, located to the west of the project (separated from the rest by the Beirut River). A tourist area, intended for the development of hotels and other services that promote economic gains to the city. A community area, intended for accommodation and reconstruction of homes destroyed in the explosion. The great park, which acts as a green bar that connects the different sectors. Finally, the cultural zone, composed of a large semi-circular building (museum and shopping center), as well as the silos building as the focal point of the memorial.

Technical information

The structure of the cultural building is proposed as a series of platforms, supported externally by a reticulated metal structure. This building will present its faces completely made of glass, covered by a metalic mesh (a "skin") to improve the environmental conditioning inside.
On the other hand, for the remodeling of the silos, the idea is to restore the present structure, as well as including some glazed panels, which will represent the reconstruction of the port after its destruction.
