Project idea

The idea of the project is to revalue the "Mercado del Norte" market and its surroundings, approaching it as an integral proposal that provides a solution to the current urban and architectural problems.
The proposal seeks to generate an urban space that serves as a support for the meeting, social and cultural exchange of all citizens and generate a scenario where the social life of the city takes place.
The market will become a neuralgic point within the city, both for commerce and social expression. It will also become a landmark and a national tourist attraction.
Some goals for this project are:
- Adapt the market to current needs and technologies.
- Resignify the heritage value of the building.
- To condition the building in accordance with the Health and Safety regulations.
-To promote a pleasant and comfortable environment for the merchant and user.
-Respect the architectural and spatial conception of the existing building.

Project description

The project is based on the concept of "Urban patio". It arises from the idea of preserving part of the old market building as it has heritage value: the original walls, the punctual structure, the facades and the shape of the roof. It is the walls that determine the structuring axes of the general project. In order to give more value to the building and due to the new needs program, it was decided to empty the center of the block by creating a large public space with a commercial gallery in two levels, reconstructing the commercial area with a new concept. On level -1 there is also a cultural center that is linked to the public square on the corner and the commercial gallery in the central patio.
The different levels are linked by elevators and escalators, making the project accessible to all users.
On level 2 there is a vehicular parking lot.
The market, the commercial gallery and the cultural center make up the most public and extroverted part of the project.
Finally, a densification in height is proposed by a high building that contemplates both hotel and apartments. The building has a skin made by metal sunshades that allow regulating the entry of light and air to the user's taste. This generates a dynamic facade.
This large building is the the most private and introverted part of the complex.

Technical information

The support system of the market building is given by its original structure, a punctual system of reinforced concrete beams and columns that support a shed roof with windows that allow the entry of air and light from above.
The punctual system is repeated throughout the complex, allowing for more permeable and flexible spaces.
The materiality of the whole complex is based on the expression of the materials as they are: concrete, glass and steel.
The commercial gallery has a large pergola with native plants that allow to have shady places which are very necessary given the high temperatures of the city in summer, achieving open and comfortable spaces for all users.
