Project idea

The task was a design of a new city center for Žilina, a small village in central Bohemia. Located near vast forest area but still in commuting distance of Prague, it makes Žilina an attractive place for living. Even though, the village faces a lot of problems: The lack of urban concept in previous years led to fragmentation of public facilities around whole village, making it obscure. Absence of a main public space led to no events or happenings being held and making the village lifeless. This design aims to create such a space alongside with the objects that will contribute to creating a living center where inhabitants can gather. It also suggests long-term changes for the whole village that would improve public space and life. After a careful analysis, the site of the center was set at the eastern part of the village, being a natural gravity point at the moment with opportunities for future development. Center is defined by three buildings - object of local municipality, pub with multifunctional hall and library. The objects are connected to the original urban structure of the village. Connected together by a wooden structure results in creating small alleys, nooks and more private areas, a typical organization of a small village. Visual look of the objects is inspired by traditional village buildings of this area - bricks with lime paint were used on agricultural buildings. Combined with concrete and wooden elements a timeless look is created, being acceptable by the locals.

Project description

The proposal works with three new objects creating a new village center: library with café, pub with multifunctional hall and local municipality building. That contains not only offices, ceremony hall or archive, but also commercial unit or doctor. In the attic there are also two flats that could be rent, used by employees of the offices etc.

Technical information

The structures are built of calcium silicate bricks that have good load-bearing, accumulative and acoustic features. The roof structures are wooden or steel prefabricated beams. The main source of energy is heat pump, providing heat for hot water, air circulation or heating systems.
