Project idea

The rebirth is a proposed architectural design concept for the Port of Beirut in Lebanon. It is a design that has totally reevaluated the use of the old port and has introduce an entirely new business aspect that will not only enhance the port financially but it will attract local citizens, international tourists, and investors of all kind. It has kept the existing zones the way they were except for the Free Zone. The Free Zone has been relocated and now sits a new financial district and residential area.

Project description

This design has included all of the seven previous zones that was working flawlessly before the explosion, with the exception of one area. It has placed six of the zones exactly where they were and has relocated the free zone which now consist of a new financial district that includes 7 eighteen floors office buildings, a new fire and police station, four mutli-level garages, eight 14 floors residential apartment buildings with retail space on the street level, four mutli-purpose buildings for restaurants with retail space, an outdoor memorial and a park. These new areas will bring a tremendous economic growth to the port and the design also includes a new shipping pier that can accommodate the largest cruise ship in the world that will bring in new international tourists to the area.
The intention of this design is to be able to share the area with its citizens but yet still function as a productive and thriving port. The new free zone that acted as a temporary lay-over area for foreign cargo to be shipped right back out to another destination, will now consist of several multi-floor garages for cars and new storage areas for containers.
The port will now be able to be compared to other thriving ports in the world that consist of not just importing and exporting cargo and containers but also able to now include entertainment areas, music festivals, designer retail stores, affordable living and a financial office complex that can invite major corporations to lease out space.
The main attraction to this new business district will be the memorial building. It consists of a new three story cross laminated timber and glass structure they will highlight the events of the explosions, to include exhibits, a water falls in the center of the building, an area displaying all of the names of the people who perished during the explosion, a coffee and tea shops and a host of amenity that will make a visit a memorable experience. There is also an area outside in the park by the water that will be for selected artists from the city to create art work, sculptures and other items dedicated to the memory of the people of Lebanon.

Technical information

Most of the buildings in this concept in the New Business District and Passenger Terminal will be constructed from Cross Laminated Timber and Glass which provides strength and is fire resistant.
The remaining six zones are to be constructed the way they previously were but, with using the newest technology for sustainable designs, such as solar panels for power and green materials on exteriors and roofs.
