Project idea

Since our local heritage was the focal point of the project, we wanted to enhance the existing, while exploiting the concept of the port. The main goal was making an attraction out of the absurd of the collaboration of man and nature, thus implementing only a few elements which would underline the existing nature and local architecture. The port alone, would be a key part of the concept, therefore the touristical aspect would be increased. Our intervention would soley be a tool for combining a bizarre attraction, port, and visual allure.

Project description

Our project is located on Begej channel in the city of Zrenjanin (Serbia) on the spot where the stream of the channel creates an island. This island is called “Little America” because of its isolated morphology and is an interesting urban area of Zrenjanin filled with cultural and natural heritage, such as the buildings of the Courthouse, Prosecution office, jail, old factories, churches and many parks. One of its most striking features is the only bridge in the world that spans bare ground and therefore is called locally “The bridge on dry land” or just “Dry bridge”. We wanted to underline and promote this local phenomenon and hence our project’s topic is absurd and contrast creating a longitudinal “water” bridge which wraps the island, instead of a usual transversal, and in the case of Zrenjanin, instead of the existing “dry“ bridge. This dry ground underneath the Dry bridge resurfaced inter alia due to global warming and our focal point is creating visual continuation of the channel by using reflection and assuring its functioning waterway slits for tourist boats tours, as well as designing a boat port.

Technical information

Since the dry bridge alone has it's own construction system, we have just used it and enhanced it by adding new elements of contrustion between the two mirror sides. As the whole construction evolves around balancing the two sides, it also serves for the inner green oasis ramps. Them being cantilevered, the roof construction is serving as a fastening measure, besides endulging in the aesthetics part of the project, compiling with the existed. Along with this, the ambiental lightning is set along the port, enhancing the illusional part of the mirror continuation. The boat parking on one side, and the dry part on the other are implying conceptually on the balance, creating the ying-yang effect, having a bit of each other inside. The concept permeates with the technical elements
