Project idea

The initial trigger of the project comes from the idea posed in the 1950s: develop a new study place that allows educating people in body and spirit.
TAS is an educational institution with a new educational character that takes into account universal wisdom. The Knowledge development wouldn’t only be linked to work done inside the classrooms.
TAS is an approach that intends academic interdisciplinary, development of creativity, intellectual and emotional growth and coexistence between colleagues, in a privileged environment.
TUCUMÁN. TO PATIOS. TO GREEN. TO THE YUNGA.
The space sequences, the patios linked to a circulation, the vegetation being part of the spaces and the use of bricks are architectural characteristics that live historically in our memory.
TAS does not provide anything new, but re-interprets everything that exists in pursuit of a conscious and appropriate intervention.

Project description

-TAS (by its Spanish initials for Templo Al Saber) is conceived as an educational complex, where the proposed functions are adapted to the site’s character.
The “to terrace” model, bricks and space sequences so meaningful in our society are reinterpreted in pursuit of a new architecture conscious of where it is found.
University residences, Amphitheater, literary Coffee-Bar, UNT offices, thesis room, library, classrooms and a temple of faith are the elements that compose the programme.
Through these tools it is proposed the urban requalification of the site and to activate the foundations of our recent past forgotten in the sierras.

-SITE ANALYSIS, PHISICAL CONTEXT
San Javier. Tucumán, Argentina.
Listed as a small mountain countryside, San Javier is located just 25 kilometers away from the capital of the province. It is a strong tourist proposal in the region due to its landscapes and natural viewpoints.
Characterized by its undulating hills, the constant green and the particular Yunga, a characteristic ecosystem of the Tucumán foothills, it results in an extremely special and attractive natural landscape. Its temperate humid climate always with temperatures lower than the metropolitan area, make the site an ideal option.
It is no coincidence that it was chosen for the first proposal of the University City of Tucumán, since in addition to its exceptional beauty, it gathers the healthiest climatic conditions.
Bringing the city closer to the beauty of nature.

-A BRIEF HISTORIACAL REVIEW OF THE SITE
SECTORS:
MAIN CORE
Located in the summit area at 1200 meters above sea level, it included the different faculties, student residences, several residences for teachers, libraries, sports activities area, open sky theater, stadium of shows, pedestrian and car roads, and the upper station of the funicular.
SECONDARY CORE
Located in the foothills at 600 meters above sea level, in Horco Molle, both groups of buildings would be joined by a funicular (electric train).
It would have a host nucleus, agriculture school, crop fields, high school, housing, general services (Bathroom, kitchen, cafeteria) and the lower funicular station.
MATERIALIZED
At the time of the definitive stoppage of the works, some of them had already been completed.
From the secondary town of Horco Molle, 30 houses were built, as well as the enormous School of Nursing and the High School workshops.

-URBAN PROPOSAL
UNT FUNCTION
Historically the CUT approach means a great success for the institutional growth of the UNT, turning it into the largest study center in northern Argentine.
Currently, the urban approach has a different scale but a very similar origin essence: decentralize.
TAS seeks to reduce the percentage of displacements in the most traveled zones of the metropolitan area by proposing the temporary displacement of the different faculties towards the sierras area.
The intervention proposes to activate an arm of the UNT exempted to the Gran San Miguel but integrally linked, increasing the number of public transportation units arriving in the sector, posing bicycle paths and relevant signs.
In addition, the reactivation of the funicular (internal transportation proposed in the 50's) is proposed, renewing the systems for a safe, economic and ecological operation.

-COMPOSITION
THE APPROACH IS MADE UP OF THE EXISTING BLOCK INTERVENED, A LIBRARY, CLASSROOMS AND A TEMPLE OF FAITH ALL ARE LINKED BY RAISED GATEWAYS, DIAGONAL AXES SIMILAR TO THOSE THOUGHT FOR THE HISTORICAL APPROACH.
THE ARRIVAL TO THE CONJUNCT CAN BE OF 3 TYPES, THROUGH THE FUNICULAR, AUTOMOBILE OR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. ALL ARE LINKED TO AN ACCESS SQUARE THAT DIRECTS THEM INSIDE THIS.
THE ACCESS IS GIVEN BY THE BLOCK, THE INTERVENTION RAISES A LARGE DRY PLAZA UNDER A HEAVY BOX THAT SEEMS TO LEVIT OVER IT.
THE LAKE DIVIDES THE WHOLE BETWEEN THE RESIDENCES, LEISURE ACTIVITIES OF THE BLOCK, AND THE STUDY SECTORS.
ON THE LAKE, TWO LARGE AXES ARE IN CHARGE OF ARTICULATING THE BLOCK WITH THE LIBRARY AND THE CLASSROOMS. THESE ARE MADE BY LARGE GATEWAYS THAT UNIFY CIRCULATION ON A SINGLE LEVEL.
TO CONCLUDE A THIRD AXIS, NORMAL TO THE MAIN, LINKS THE ASSEMBLY TO THE TEMPLE, MAKING IT POSSIBLE A MORE SECURED AND QUIET LOCATION.

-EXISTING BLOCK (BUILDING)
THE GIANT ACCESS BECOMES THE SYMBOL OF THE CONJUNT. THE INVITATION TO BE PART OF IT.
THE SPACE IS GENERATED BY THE SUBTRACTION OF 1/4 OF THE VOLUME, DIVIDING THE PRIVATE FUNCTIONS FROM THE PUBLIC USE. LITERARY BAR / CAFE RESIDENCES, OFFICES, AND AMPHITHEATER, RESPECTIVELY.
A LARGE SOLID BRICK BOX CROWNS THE ACCESS, FLOATING OVER THIS. CORRESPONDS TO THE NEW EVENT / THESIS ROOM PLANNED FOR THE UNT (NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF TUCUMÁN).

-ROOM CELLS
CREATE SPATIALITY. TO PATIOS, TO "YUNGAS".
EACH CELL WITH ITS PATIO.
COMMON PATIOS ARE PROPOSED FOR THE MEETING AND THE STUDENT SOCIAL RELATIONSHIP.
ALSO, EACH ONE HAS A SPACE FOR SPECIAL USES ACCORDING TO THE TRAINING DEVELOPED BY EACH USER.
A PROJECTOR, MUSICAL FORNITURE, LABORAORY SPACE, ETC. THE SPACE ADAPTS TO ITS USE.

-LIBRARY
THE NEW WAYS OF LIVING THE READING
THE BOX INSIDE THE BOX.
A GLASS CUBE WITH AN INTERIOR SPACE THAT SEEMS TO LEVITATE.
THE HISTORICAL PROTOTYPE GOES THROUGH A ROUNDING CHANGE, THE LIBRARY STOPS HAVING BOOKS AND ITS SPACE BECOMES MORE PERMEABLE AND FLEXIBLE.
THE MATERIALITY IS OF THE SITE, THE STRUCTURE HOWEVER IS A CONCEPTUAL REQUIREMENT, A SYSTEM OF HIDDEN PORTS SUPPORT THE INTERIOR FROM THE CEILING, ACCENTUATING THE LIGHTNESS OF THE PROPOSE THAT SEEMS TO FLOAT.
THE CHARACTER OF FUNCTION HAS DISCOVERED A NEW FORM.
A LIBRARY WITHOUT BOOKS.
TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION ALLOW US ACCESSIBILITY TO A BOOK THROUGH A QR CODE.
IT IS SO THAT THE LIBRARY BECOMES A PLACE BARE AND FLEXIBLE, WHERE THE USER CAN SCAN HIS CODE AND CHOOSE TO EXPERIENCE THE READING IN ANY SITE OF THE CONJUNCT OR EVEN OUTSIDE OF IT.

-CLASSROOMS
THE BOX EXPERIENCES DIFFERENT SITUATIONS, IT MOVES RESPECT TO THE MAIN CIRCULATION IN ORDER TO GENERATE ROUTES THAT GIVE IT PRIVACY.
RAMPS ENTER THE VEGETATION OF THE SITE AND COMMUNICATE WITH THE STUDY SPACES.
THE SPACE IS FLEXIBLE. A COMPOSITIONAL MODULE CAN BE OPENED OR CLOSED AS THE CASE MAY BE, ALLOWING CLASSROOMS TO ADAPT TO ITS USE.
THE PARASOL, A RESOURCE FOR PROTECTION AGAINST SUNLIGHT.
STRAIGHT TO THE NORTH AND SOUTH (TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SUN AND NATURAL LIGHTING RESPECTIVELY) INCLINED TO THE EAST AND WEST (SUN PROTECTION). IT ALSO HELPS TO AVOID GLARE, SINCE THE SOLAR INCIDENCE INSIDE THE CLASSROOM IS NOT DIRECT.

-TEMPLE OF FAITH
SPACE PILGRIMAGE
DISCOVER THE SPACE
SET OF VOLUMES AND OUTDOOR TRAYS, A TOUR OF SENSORY STIMULES BY THE ARCHITECTURE.
INVITE TO DISCOVER IT, DISCOVER YOURSELF.
IT ENCLOSES YOU, SETS YOU FREE, PROTECTS YOU, SEEKS THE ENCOUNTER WITH THE FAITH IN A PERSONAL SITUATION OF OWN WORSHIP.
CULTIVATE THE SPIRIT.
