Project idea

The site for the proposed New Contemporary Library project – Biblioteca Publica de Madrid, is Plaza de la Villa square located in the Centro district of Madrid. In the area, there are several monuments such as Madrid Palace and Plaza Mayor that are attractive places for tourists and citizens.

Project description

The concept of the library is tied with the „genius loci“ of the considered area with an aim to harmonically retain the character of the square as a public area and at the same time to respect the already existing walking routes and surrounding buildings that are complementing the historical context of Plaza de la Villa. These are Casa de los Lujanes, former residence of the head accountant of the Kingdom, Casa de Cisneros, a former palace, and Casa de la Villa, former city hall and prison.
The proposed project strives to create a lively city space and to lift it to the level of the full-fledged urban complex to establish a connection between the existing historical structure and the newly designed modern library.
The library is planned mostly underground to match the inclined terrain of the square and the maximum allowed height of the designed building being six meters. There are three glass units situated over ground whose location is in accordance with the original walking routes and the inside library room disposition.
The two units located at the front side of the square, facing Calle Mayor street, are the entrance to the library, bookstore and administrative offices. At the backside of the square, there is the Coffee shop with an interesting corner view to the reading room. The main entrance is leading directly to the stairs that open the foyer area and the reading room of Biblioteca Publica de Madrid. In the central part of the square, there are the walkable glass floor and the green segments that are creating a pleasant, relaxing atmosphere for visitors.
The preservation of the objective of Plaza de la Villa being a square and the construction of public premises of the new library will bring life to the square itself throughout the year and create a fascinating place for visitors of the city.
The entry to the library area leads from the foyer through the comfortable staircase seating where visitors can sit down, relax and read the borrowed books. The spacious reading room and the premises for the book cataloging are visually divided by the greenery.
The materiality of the overground units is designed according to the climate conditions in Madrid – the double-glass facade with the ventilation and specifically designed glass surface which will prevent overheating during summer months. The significant remark of this project is the underground glass roof being designed as a form of walkable glass-floor. It is located over the foyer and the reading room to bring the direct natural light to the underground parts of the library.
