Project idea

Declaration of Project
The project is to design a retreat in anawilundawa bird sanctuary. The focus of this design project is to create an environmentally friendly and sustainable design by analyzing the problems which were faced by wetland and people. Designing a retreat with minimal damage or waste to the surrounding environment of the wetland will be challenging in this project. My idea is to create an awareness between the wetland people who were mentally stuck between the political and historical background of anawilundawa bird sanctuary. This project will help to enhance tourism in anawilundawa. Enhancing tourism will make wetland people to be supported more with their economic factor by providing and introducing job opportunities.

Context
Anawilundawa is situated between Sri Lanka’s major towns of Chilaw and Puttalam. At the NORTHWESTERN province of Srilanka. To be more precise it situated between the coastal area and the Chilaw-Puttalam railway line. The main and only entrance by the land way is from Colombo Puttalam Road. the rural context and improper roads show the undeveloped situation of anawilundawa. as per the information collected wetland people are suffering from a lack of infrastructure and economic crisis.

Project description

I choose a factor that I felt when visiting anawilundawa. ‘No birds’ - which means the birds are not visible from the site. Because of its dense vegetation and less habitation in the site. Even though it is rich in vegetation, the direct sun and abandoned prawn farmlands have become a negative impact on its habitation. With that, I started to analyze the less popularity of anawilundawa bird sanctuary by comparing it with other sanctuaries and wildlife conservation centers. The results were the lack of guidance for bird watching. So, my idea is to create a guide and make it useful for all different type of users.
My idea is to enhance tourism by promoting bird watching. So, I have zoned the bird sanctuary according to the bird habitation. And redirect them to those zones using light vehicle accessible pathways. At the end of every pathway, there needs to be an attraction point. For that, I will be proposing a structure and some activities. Which is more compatible for the users of retreat.
structure - bird watching, wildlife photography, meditation
activity - canoeing, cycling

Technical information

In a design, material selection plays a key role. We show emotions, scene, history and everything through the material of a design. In our design, the structure needs to more eco-friendly to combine with nature and currently occurring bird habitation around the site context. And the construction methods need to be less in the damaging site and material wastage. Construction materials:
* Adobe
* Rammed earth
* Bag construction
* Woven coils
* Compressed woods
* Thatch
* Treated tree trunks
* Concrete
* Steel

Most of the source for the materials were gathered from the site and context.
adobe - mud, straw, rubbles
rammed earth - mud clay
bag construction - mud, sacks
woven coils - coconut husk
thatch - thatch
treated tree trunks - collected from the trimmed tree of the build
area
