Project idea

The aim of this project was to create an extension to an existing department of Architecture in COMSATS University, Islamabad.

Project description

This design is an intervention to an existing building in COMSATS University. It consists of studio spaces, workshop and exhibition spaces and Library for creative people. The main concept was to carve out the identity of creative people in a purely technical science university. It is an epitome of juxtaposition between old and new reflecting the best of both languages without overshadowing either of them.

Technical information

The main concern was while designing the area was the claustrophobic site due to presence of existing multi-story buildings around the site and to deal with the problems of natural light and ventilation without disturbing the existing spaces within the building and also create a link between the old and new. While designing the area it was important to provide maximum amount of light and ventilation without direct glare or heat. Everything was to be designed according to the movement of the sun, in a way that the spaces always get diffused sunlight at lower angles, hence the spaces get ample amount of light without direct glare or heat.
