URBAN INTERWEAVE - Reinforcing the Idea of a Positive Medical Experience

Project idea

The proposed development aims to knit the site and the human oriented surrounding into one fabric. The new program provides a range of activities bringing back the informal culture of people gathering. The design creates an interesting variety of spaces, interlocking programs, and attracting people into the site with a prime goal of connecting scattered facilities.

Project description

The Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children (LRH) is a tertiary care children's hospital in Colombo, Sri Lanka with a bed-strength of over 900 and nearly
3,000 patients visiting for outpatient care daily, it is now considered to be the largest children's hospital in the world. All services are free of charge
in keeping with the free state healthcare policy of the Sri Lankan government. With a goal of providing immediate access to critical care to all Sri Lankan children struggling with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) and other critical illnesses, a Cardiac and Critical Care Complex is proposed to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital.

Technical information

This prospect is getting additionally relevant in the light of the mega polis policies for a major increase of the participation of the industrial production in the formation of the country’s GDP. All of the depicted attributes make very compatible with the urban condition. Creating condition for their future integration into Borella urban structure, especially through the transformation of its nearby commercial zone, would diversify its production base and population. This strategy does not only aim to solve this issue based on their existing condition, but rather to generate the social capital that is necessary to form a resilient community that can resolve and adapt to problems that arise.
