Project idea

Down-syndrome and autism are still often considered as mental illnesses. The lack of concern from government nor family has caused these children with special needs can not develop optimally. The government program that focused on optimizing inclusive schools only seems unhelpful for children with severe autism/down-syndrome.
This project has purpose to fulfill rights of every child, that is education, specifically for those with special needs; to get education according to their ability, have a community to support each other, and get the medical help in form of therapy and psychologist consultation.

Project description

Autism and down-syndrome are different, but they have one main deficiency, that is difficulty in communication. This is the reason and the background of concept determined; centralize. The practice of this concept in design is to focus on increasing intimacy and togetherness between users, with expectation that children will feel at home, and communicating more comfortable.

The site is located in Sub-Urban area, is chosen because of its surroundings that are still green and natural, so it can help children get the neutral, comforting stimulus that are rare to be found in Urban area. Having fairly steep contour, the site is designed to be "adventurous" area for children, so they can get experience of going to school and going back to home, while doing simple exercise (walking) on daily basis without neglecting safety for children.

Technical information

The design is divided into 4 big functions: education complex, health complex, community complex, and dormitory. The whole masses are connected with semi-outdoor circulation, consists of ramps and stairs, protected from rain, and surrounded by farming garden, in which children can have gardening activity and also acts as location marker, by planting different types and colors of the vegetation.

Education complex contains class from kindergarten, primary school, and vocational school. This building also holds hydro-therapy, gym, and apartment/office simulation rooms. Health complex contains therapy rooms, consultation rooms, and examination room. Community complex contains administration office, multi-function hall, and family-support rooms. The dormitory can hold up to 52 children, with dining area, pantry on every floor, and caregivers rooms.
