Idea projektu

The idea of this project emerges from the reality of Lefkosa as a city of transit, encounter, and contrast — where the past and present meet, but do not always connect. The city is rich in history, yet struggles with urban fragmentation and a lack of integrated transportation.

This project proposes a new kind of transportation hub — one that is not just a place of movement but also a place of meaning. A space where people pass through, but also meet, pause, and connect. A place that reflects the identity of Lefkosa — its layered past and its future ambitions.

The goal is to design a building that becomes a bridge: between cities, between eras, and between people.

Popis projektu

This transportation hub is structured in three levels, responding both to the topography of the site and the dual nature of travel:

Underground floor: Dedicated to long-term parking and the intercity train and bus stations.

Ground floor: Divided by a main road, it separates intercity and within-city functions, with shared public spaces and commercial activity.

Upper levels: Host cultural programs, accommodation, and drone-taxi platforms — future-oriented services that complement the hub’s modern vision.

Inspired by Lefkosa’s architectural history, the design adopts symmetry, courtyards, and modular forms, reinterpreted with glass, steel, and concrete. The layout ensures intuitive navigation, while offering moments of pause through green spaces, gathering points, and exhibition areas.

The building does not only serve the movement of people, it tells a story — of a city rooted in time, yet open to change.

Technické informace

Structure:

Substructure: Reinforced concrete using a Gradated Orthogonal Beam Grid system for underground wide spans (12m) supporting bus circulation and train areas.

Superstructure: Steel frame and solid web beam system supporting the long-span roof and open halls.

A truss bridge connects both parts of the hub, suspended 5.5m above the road for uninterrupted circulation.

Materials:

Local stone, exposed concrete, steel, and glass to evoke the contrast between past and future.

Use of glazed roofing and courtyards ensures natural light and reduces travel-related stress.

Sustainability:

Glass roof allows passive lighting.

Green and wellness spaces offer environmental and social value.

Drone-taxi platform anticipates sustainable urban air mobility.

Dimensions:

Total area: approx. 12,000 m²

Underground height: 5m for bus and train circulation.

Standard column grid: 12m span with 600mm diameter circular columns.

This is not just a building. It is a place of passage, a story in space, and a vision for Lefkosa’s future.
