Metamorphosis: Complete Change in Appearance, Character, Circumstance. The Creative and Dynamic Atmosphere at AFK.

Metamorphosis is a visionary architectural project that embraces the concept of complete transformation in appearance, character, and circumstance. Rooted in the principle of architectural transformation, it explores how an architectural concept, structure, or organization can be altered in response to specific contexts or conditions without losing its identity or core concept. The project aims to convey the creative and dynamic atmosphere that defines AFK (Artistic Foundation for Knowledge), an epicenter of artistic and intellectual exploration.

At its core, Metamorphosis seeks to create a captivating and immersive experience for visitors, highlighting the ever-evolving nature of AFK's environment. The focal point of the project is a large "place des particules," a central gathering space that extends seamlessly from the existing globe structure to the future new main building. This strategic positioning signifies the connection between the present and the future, emphasizing the project's intent to represent the collective imagination of the Kandyan community rather than a single individual.

The overall design intention of Metamorphosis is to provoke a sense of wonder and curiosity, encouraging visitors to contemplate the concept of transformation and its potential impact on architecture. The proposal outline suggests that over time, often-used parts of the structure could become more permanent, while other elements undergo continuous change and adaptation. Through discrete manipulations and permutations, the project responds dynamically to its evolving context and conditions.

Imagined as a fluid and organic process, the project envisions the gradual transformation of initial architectural elements into new uses, reflecting the evolving needs and aspirations of the AFK community. This transformative journey culminates in the complete reshaping of AFK, representing a new and inspiring architectural form that embodies the boundless imagination and creative spirit of its community.

The dynamic atmosphere at AFK is not only celebrated but actively encouraged through Metamorphosis. The project becomes a catalyst for collaborative exploration, fostering an environment where artists, thinkers, and visionaries converge to push boundaries and challenge conventions. It embodies the belief that architecture can serve as a vessel for creative expression, empowering individuals to actively participate in the ongoing evolution and reinvention of their built environment.

Metamorphosis transcends traditional notions of static architecture, offering a profound reflection on the possibilities of transformation. It underscores the notion that identity and concept can be retained while embracing change, thereby shaping a vibrant and ever-evolving space that reflects the dynamic nature of the AFK community. Ultimately, Metamorphosis invites visitors to witness the transformative power of architecture, inspiring them to embrace change and actively contribute to the creation of a more vibrant and imaginative future.

Popis projektu

The renovation of Alliance Française in Kandy, Sri Lanka, is a remarkable example of how the concept of metamorphosis can be applied in the renovation of a French educational building, using local labor and locally available materials as a methodological approach. The concept of metamorphosis in architecture refers to the transformation and rejuvenation of a space, often involving physical, functional, and aesthetic changes. In the case of Alliance Française in Kandy, the renovation aimed to revitalize the existing building, while incorporating sustainable and culturally relevant elements through the use of local labor and materials.
The concept of metamorphosis in architecture signifies a profound change or transformation in the form, function, and aesthetic of a building. Technological process on the Metamorphosis Project: Design and Technological Approach Based on Local Domestic Industries in Kandy, Sri Lanka

This technological report outlines the design and technological approach of the Metamorphosis project, an ongoing renovation project in Kandy, Sri Lanka. The project takes into account the current economic crisis in Sri Lanka, which has resulted in high construction costs. To address this challenge, the architectural positioning of the project proposes a construction technology that relies heavily on local community labor and the utilization of materials sourced from small-scale domestic industries, particularly for the building envelope.

To achieve the desired project outcomes, a small-scale domestic industries community-based temporary construction design is suggested. The main structures of the project will be built using a reinforced concrete system, which provides stability and durability. This ensures that the core elements of the project meet the necessary structural requirements and standards.

The design and construction process is divided into two main phases. The first phase focuses on the use of reinforced concrete, which is a widely available and commonly used material in the construction industry. This phase establishes the foundation and framework of the project, providing a solid base for further development.

In the second phase, locally available materials found in the Kandy region, such as bamboo, Dumbara mats, braze recycled fittings, woods, and railway sleepers, are incorporated into the structure. These materials are sourced from small-scale domestic industries, supporting local businesses and reducing the reliance on expensive imported materials. By utilizing locally available materials, the project aims to minimize costs while showcasing the cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship of the region.

The incorporation of these materials occurs after the primary design and construction phases are completed. They are added to the site to create new scenarios and spaces, serving as functional elements for accommodations and exhibitions. This approach allows for flexibility and adaptability, as the project evolves and responds to the changing needs of the community.

The design process of the Metamorphosis project is guided by the concept of metamorphosis, which involves four stages of transformation. These stages provide a framework for the project's development and allow for a dynamic and evolving design approach.

In summary, the technological approach of the Metamorphosis project in Kandy, Sri Lanka, is based on utilizing local community labor and materials from small-scale domestic industries. This approach addresses the economic challenges posed by the current crisis while embracing the cultural heritage of the region. By incorporating reinforced concrete for the main structures and integrating locally available materials, the project aims to achieve its desired outcomes while creating a sustainable and cost-effective solution.
