Idea projektu

Location

The complex is located in the place of foundations of Mologa, submerged under the waters of the Rybinsk Reservoir. In the 1930’s there were many houses, shops and 5 churches here. On 14 September 1935 was made a decision to built Rybinsk and Uglich waterworks to raise to 4 meters, dooming the town of Mologa.

Guise

The structure of the complex is ring-shape because a ring used to be considered a mystical symbol of eternal memory and endless sadness at the loss of homeland.

The metalic reflecting exterior of the building makes it seem to be dematerialized and merged in water.

The significant elements are a pond and a semitransparent campanile. A prototype of the latter was the bell tower of the Cathedral of Christ’s Rusurrection. In the pond, you can see luminous art installations made of organic-glass tubes and located in the place of the ruined foundations. It should gradually fill with water covering the artificial town.

Functionality

The complex consits of two buildings. There are some entrance departments, a museum exhibition and a café, on the first floor, and offices, a lecture hall and a library, on the second. All buildings are connected by underwater glass-enclosed galleries where you can see the installations.
«The Hall of Darkness» is one of the key rooms of the museum complex. Here you can hear whooping which are gradually replaced by screaming and explosions.
In «The Hall of Soaring Stories», you can see semitransparent pavillions with tragic stories of former residents.
In «The Hall of Forced Migrants» you can learn about evicted people’s fates.
«The Dream about Mologa» is the last room. There are old photos of the city and its residents here.
At the end of the excursion you may answer the question «Was it worth destroying the town?»
