Idea projektu

The designed concept aims to create a multi-functional site in which local people and tourists can perform different kinds of art as well as experience native culture and access handmade craft goods in the included pavilions. The main problem which the project solves is the creation of suitable and adequately equipped spaces for educating, practicing and performing all kinds of time arts: music, drama, dance and puppet shows. Other additional activities can be craft workshops, practicing sports, creating visual arts, meditation and public speeches. The Theatre PopulaireIdea(l) has the ultimate possibility of becoming country`s largest cultural center as an addition to its main purpose. The designed buildings shelter the necessary functions, which are all logically connected and create a user-friendly environment. The whole complex is to raise the level of cultural development in the town of Ougadougou, attract international visitors and represent a desirable place for native citizens. Apart from the building themselves the site plan suggests that the free space in the yard is preserved and further developed and could be used both for recreation and different outdoor activities and rehearsals.

Popis projektu

The architectural approach aims to include simple and easy to build structures by using local materials such as brick, clay and wood. Due to the mild climate in Burkina Faso the proposed buildings include many openings and perforated brick walls, providing natural ventilation and pleasant indoor work environment, keeping a constant connection with the outdoor space. A fundamental design objective was the eventual realization by local workforce and craftsmanship. The main volume if the SHOW area is placed closed to the existing amphitheatral seats so as to take less area from the site and partly use the existing structure. It includes part of LABO`s functional parts by integrating in a single space a meeting area for spectators and artists. An important role of this building is to organize a clear flow of spectators in and out through the ticket desks in the main hall. The main educational halls of the LABO area are situated in a nearby detached building with free acess. They can be rearranged according to the specific requirements of the activities and combine both separate functional spaces and one shared rehearsal and meeting space. The WORK area posseses own service entrance for professional actors as well as large vehicle acess for stage sets delivery or ambulance service. The dressing rooms for actors are conveniently situated close to the stage with direct acess. The stage itself is now the needed size and has a light covering wooden structure which provides relative shadingand encircles the stage space.

Technické informace

The list of materials is short and strictly chosen, bearing in mind functional, structural andcost aspects of the designed buildings. All of them accept the same construction method of wooden skeleton structure, enclosed with partially solid brick walls and a finish roof covering of specially made clay tiles. The roof itself bends over the solid volumes so as to create a shading peak. They are also elevated over the ground floor in order to avoid flooding during rain periods and put an accent on the silhouette. These elevated base plinths have their own skeleton hidden structure. Concrete is used only for the building`s foundations and for thesupporting wall of the theatre. It remains invisible because the main accent is on visible earth-coloured materials, bearing the site`s specific athmosphere.
