Architecture

Multireligious temple complex

Elizaveta Istrofilova

Project idea

The concept of the project is the search for harmony in architecture to create harmony between religions.

The project emphasizes equality of views and at the same time takes into account individuality.

The circle is a symbol of unity, it serves to display the continuity of the development of the universe, time, life, their unity.

The temples have the same area, height and cylinder shape. They stand in a row with each other - this means equality between views. The temples are united by a common boulevard - this means the unity of religion.

Project description

The complex includes 5 temples of the main world religions: Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Judaism, Buddhism and Islam - they are the basis of the complex and are the center of the composition.

In addition to the religious function, the complex also has: educational, commemorative and exhibition functions. Therefore, there are a school, a hotel and an exhibition complex on the territory which consists of 5 identical buildings belonging to each religion.

The hotel block occupies 3 floors and has 69 rooms with 156 beds, of which 9 rooms are 4-bed. The hotel has a separate kitchen block, which provides a separate cafe on the 2nd floor. The hotel also has its own closed and quiet courtyard.

The educational block occupies 2 floors and has 24 classrooms and 6 workshops. The administrative block is connected to the educational one, it contains the administration office, the medical center room and 4 additional offices. The administrative, educational and hotel blocks are connected by a spacious common refectory, where one kitchen block serves all 5 religions. Between the two kitchen blocks there is a common utility yard, and behind the school there is a large walking yard for both children and adults.

The core of the site is a large pedestrian boulevard which connects all functional areas. The boulevard is also a place of spiritualization and rest.

Technical information

The temples are made of monolithic concrete and the facades are made in a one-tone light plaster. This emphasises the unity of religions and deprives the possibility of comparison. However, each temple, due to its canonical layout and the required arrangement of rooms, has a unique shape and architecture.
