Project idea

The main idea was to create a multifunctional building that will serve various sports, cultural and social activities, not only students but also the general public.

Project description

The aim of my bachelor thesis was to design the Multifunctional gymnasium locatded in the capital Bratislava in the Nové Mesto, near the student dormitory Mladá Garda. The land is part of the sports complex, in which, in addition to the football field and tennis courts, there is a running track. The engaged territory has a good transport connection with the city.
The main idea was to create a multifunctional building that will serve various sports, cultural and social activities, not only students but also the general public. The building naturally adapts to the surroundings with its ground plan and thus follows the arc shape of the running track. Its shape does not disturb the character of the territory and is conceived in the context of the building of the boarding house Mladá Garda.
Multifunctional gym is designed as a stand-alone building with two above-ground and one underground floor. The main entrance to the building is oriented to the east side on the first floor. In the underground floor there is the center of the playing area with the size of the handball field, which allows the multifunctionality of the area, so the space inside the building is variable and usable for various occasions of sports, musical or theatrical character. The playing area runs up to the second floor. Thanks to this location, communication is created on the first and second floors, offering views of the playing area. There are spaces such as fitness, café, workshop rooms and offices.

Technical information

The building consists of a combined load-bearing system of walls and columns, placed on a foundation bath with a waterproofing system. Due to the large span, the roof structure consists of a wooden grate of rectangular cross-section with a height of 800 mm, above which is placed a trapezoidal sheet metal. The building also uses a reinforced concrete coffered ceiling structure.
