Idea projektu

The project is conceived as an architectural exploration of contrast between the arid desert surface and the hidden life beneath it. Inspired by the unique geomorphological phenomenon of Al-Sawqa‘ana, the design is rooted in the idea that life can emerge from the most extreme environments.

The architectural language reflects this duality: the external built forms are derived from the cracked textures of dry desert soil, symbolizing harshness, rigidity, and exposure. These abstracted patterns gradually transform and lead visitors inward and downward, guiding them toward the lush green core of the site.

Al-Sawqa‘ana represents the heart of the concept, acting as a symbol of vitality, mystery, and continuity between nature, history, and culture. The project translates this paradox into a spatial journey that allows visitors to physically and emotionally experience the transition from dryness to abundance, reinforcing the identity and narrative of the Karbala desert.

Popis projektu

The project is a fully integrated tourist resort located in the desert of Karbala, designed to promote natural, cultural, and experiential tourism. It is centered around the rare Al-Sawqa‘ana phenomenon, which functions as the primary attraction and social core of the resort. Surrounding this central element are restaurants, recreational spaces, and public gathering areas that enhance visitor interaction with the site.

A dedicated museum complex is directly connected to the central zone and consists of three thematic sections: astronomy, natural and geological sciences, and traditional Bedouin life. These sections are spatially linked through a circular bridge that encircles Al-Sawqa‘ana and culminates in a descending path that allows visitors to explore the phenomenon from within.

The resort is organized into distinct functional zones. On one side, a residential area includes 34 chalets of varying sizes and spatial qualities, designed to offer diverse views of the surrounding rocks and water features. On the opposite side, a camping and adventure zone provides immersive desert experiences through transparent sky-view capsules and contemporary reinterpretations of traditional tents. This zone also includes interactive activity areas, administrative facilities, and safari-related functions.

The overall layout is arranged in terraced levels, with the main entrance positioned at the highest point of the site. This allows visitors to visually comprehend the project as a whole before descending gradually into its core, enhancing anticipation, spatial drama, and engagement with the natural landscape.

Technické informace

The project is designed according to principles of environmental sustainability and climatic responsiveness. Natural cooling strategies are achieved through the use of subsoil layers, which help regulate indoor temperatures by reducing heat gain from the desert environment.

A smart water system utilizes on-site groundwater resources, circulating water throughout the project for cooling, humidification, and landscape integration. Water pools are strategically placed between hills and built masses to enhance air movement, improve thermal comfort, and support passive cooling processes.

Each residential and accommodation unit is equipped with independent solar panel systems, ensuring energy self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on external power sources. Renewable energy integration is a core aspect of the project’s operational strategy.

To address harsh desert conditions, windbreakers and storm protection elements are incorporated into the design. Their forms are inspired by the natural geometry of sand dunes, allowing them to function both as climatic protection devices and as landscape-integrated architectural features.

Through the integration of passive design techniques, renewable energy systems, and site-responsive planning, the project achieves a sustainable balance between environmental responsibility and experiential architectural quality.
