Encanto is envisioned as a cultural landmark in Lisbon, dedicated to the preservation, teaching, and global celebration of Fado Music, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Fado embodies Lisbon's collective memory, emotional depth, and maritime history, capturing themes of longing, nostalgia, and resilience. Despite its significance, Lisbon lacks a comprehensive hub that integrates performance, education, production, and public engagement. Existing venues are fragmented, limited in scope, and unable to provide the immersive and accessible experiences needed to preserve and transmit Fado to younger generations and international audiences.

Popis projektu

The concept of the Fado Center is rooted in the rhythm and soul of Fado music. Its flowing forms and layered spaces echo the sound waves and emotional journey of each performance, creating a spatial rhythm that mirrors themes of saudade and renewal. Just as Fado shifts between sorrow and hope, the architecture guides visitors through a journey blending intimacy and saudade, memory and discovery, seamlessly connecting to the waterfront and Lisbon's historic skyline. The project addresses this cultural gap by creating a space where architecture and music intertwine to evoke emotions and narrate stories of time, memory, and identity. Located in Belem, along the Tagus River, the design draws inspiration from Lisbon's maritime legacy and cultural landscape. The building becomes a journey, guiding visitors through interactive exhibitions, emotional tunnels of longing, performance theatres, outdoor plazas, and educational and recording studios.

Technické informace

The center's design responds to its urban and historical context, aligning with sustainability principles through the use of local materials such as Lioz limestone and cork, alongside passive design strategies and community-focused spaces.
