Mikolo'Art-CONSTRUCTION PROJECT OF AN ART AND MUSIC CONSERVATORY
located in Akorondrano Atsinanana, Antananarivo Renivohitra district

Madagascar is known for its cultural uniqueness in the field of art and is home to many talented Malagasy artists. However, since gaining independence, this identity has struggled to assert itself. From a young age, Malagasy children are not introduced to art, and this field has long been marginalized—both in education and in professional life. Artistic careers are not valued as they should be.

Despite this, young people show a strong interest in art. Their participation in artistic events—such as exhibitions, workshops, and concerts—especially in the capital, is proof of this curiosity and passion.

To help revive this overlooked identity, my project represents a first step in giving artistic education the place it truly deserves within the education system.

Mikolo’Art is an ambitious project aiming to create a Conservatory of Art and Music in the capital—one that not only meets the standards and regulations of an educational institution but, above all, responds to the real needs of its users. The goal is to create a space that positively impacts not only its occupants but also the wider population of Antananarivo.

Mikolo’Art is much more than a construction project. It is a promise for the future of young Malagasy artists and an invitation for society to reconsider the essential role of art in Madagascar.

Popis projektu

This Conservatory of Art and Music will offer both Malagasy and international artists and art enthusiasts ergonomic spaces that harmoniously blend with the environment, allowing them to freely develop their artistic talents.

It is based on a philosophy inspired by the concept of organic architecture, focusing on harmony between the project and its natural surroundings.
The architectural approach emphasizes a symbiosis between modern style and traditional Malagasy elements, aiming to build a bridge between past and present — using heritage as a foundation to meet contemporary needs while ensuring sustainability and preserving Malagasy cultural identity.

The concept seeks to materialize, through spatial volume, the very essence of the symbiosis between traditional Malagasy and modern architectural ideas.
Each part of the project — from the architectural composition to the structural design — carries symbolic meaning, reflecting aspects of life in a traditional Malagasy family.

Technické informace

-Main Load-Bearing Structure
The main load-bearing structure of the two Mikolo’Art buildings consists of a reinforced concrete post-and-beam system. This framework allows for the creation of large open spaces, ensuring protection against weather and fire, while guaranteeing the durability of the building.

- Foundation
As the site is located on marshy ground, the chosen foundation system consists of pad footings placed on bored piles to effectively stabilize the construction.

-Masonry
Clay brick walls are used for their insulating properties, reducing heat loss. Clay is also a durable material that resists aging and harsh weather conditions.

-Acoustic Treatment
In areas requiring acoustic comfort, such as the auditorium and amphitheater, lining is applied to reduce room reverberation and correct spatial resonance.

-Roof Structure and Covering
The traditional wooden framework was chosen for its ecological qualities, helping to minimize the building’s environmental footprint.
The pitched roof with clay tiles laid on a wooden frame is inspired by traditional Malagasy architecture, offering efficient rainwater drainage and high resistance to weather and impact.
