Idea projektu

This project aims to create a peaceful retreat on Galmanduwa Island, located in the Madugaga Lagoon. The vision is to build a space where people can deeply connect with nature, observe the unique Madugaga ecosystem, and also reconnect with themselves.

The retreat will offer quiet areas for meditation, mindfulness, and relaxation. It will also introduce gentle recreational activities that help people slow down, reflect, and heal. This place is not only for spiritual seekers but also for creators—artists, writers, and thinkers—who want to spend time alone in nature to find inspiration and inner peace.

Overall, this retreat will be a sanctuary where nature, creativity, and inner well-being come together.

Popis projektu

“View Point” is a meditational and recreational retreat located on the peaceful Galmanduwa Island within the Madugaga Lagoon. This project aims to create a space where people can deeply connect with the untouched beauty of the Madugaga ecosystem and reflect on their inner selves. Surrounded by water, mangroves, and wildlife, the retreat offers a rare chance to slow down, breathe, and simply be present.

The retreat will feature open pavilions, quiet meditation decks, walking paths through nature, and spaces for creative work such as writing, drawing, or simply thinking in peace. It is intended for anyone seeking spiritual rest, inspiration, or time away from distractions. Visitors can enjoy guided mindfulness practices, nature walks, or spend quiet moments observing the lagoon.

“View Point” is more than a physical place; it is an experience of silence, simplicity, and connection, designed for healing, creativity, and self-discovery

Technické informace

The construction of this retreat is carefully planned to minimize environmental impact and preserve the natural site. The main meditation pavilion is elevated above ground level to reduce the physical footprint and protect the existing landscape. Its floor is made from reclaimed railway sleepers, while the structure uses simple I-beams and a raw concrete slab, chosen to reduce material processing and visual impact.

The entrance and office buildings are constructed with rammed earth walls, which provide natural insulation, reduce construction waste, and blend with the earthy tones of the surrounding environment.

Walking pathways throughout the site are also built from reclaimed railway sleepers, supported on small concrete pillars and metal pipes, allowing rainwater and plant life to move freely beneath.

The individual meditation pods are designed using reclaimed wood for the floors and wall panels, paired with lightweight metal pipe structures and Amano sheet roofing. These pods are gently placed within the mangrove area, with slight roof angles to allow rain runoff, all while avoiding damage to the root systems and maintaining harmony with the natural ecosystem.

Overall, every design decision is guided by the principle of "build lightly, live closely with nature," offering a space that respects the environment while creating meaningful human-nature connections.
