In designing this primary school, the core idea was to create a space that echoes the joyful, curious, and fluid nature of childhood. Moving away from rigid rectilinear forms, the structure adopts a curvilinear layout; a visual and spatial language that feels more playful, organic, and engaging. Set within the dense urban context of Dhaka city, the school aims to provide a safe, breathable space for the children.
The project mainly consists of kindergarten and primary level classrooms, along with other basic functions of a primary school, including a multipurpose area for hosting different events, informal sitting zones, etc. The building wraps around an open playground, making play a focal activity and a major element of the design. The classrooms are oriented north-south to ensure maximum natural cross ventilation. A shaded corridor or balcony running along the southern side of the classrooms filters harsh sunlight and heat, while allowing ample diffused daylight from the north; thus creating well-lit, temperate interiors.
The building is constructed of load-bearing brick walls with RCC slabs. Locally-made bricks were chosen as the main material for this project due to its thermal benefits in the warm-humid climate.
