The project is located in an industrial area in the town of Slaný, not far from the capital city of the Czech Republic.
The footbridge is inspired by industrial aesthetics, such as mining towers, which reference the mining history of the Slaný area.
I translated these technical monuments into an architectural dominant with a distinct and dynamic structure. The result is a footbridge that naturally fits into its location while also creating a new landmark full of details and visual stimuli.
The vertical structures not only resemble towers but are also adapted to serve the footbridge. For example, instead of coal, a glass elevator cabin will be “extracted.” The elevator is mechanical, and the structure is open, allowing people walking on or around the footbridge to see how everything works.
The project also focuses on the comprehensive renovation of the station area in Slaný, whose spatial and technical condition is currently significantly deteriorated.
Basic infrastructure elements such as parking, pedestrian routes, or a barrier-free crossing over the railway are missing. The proposal therefore works with a comprehensive solution. It includes the adjustment of existing roads, the reconstruction of the station building, the construction of a new community center with coffee, the definition of new public spaces with a lot of vegetation, and the modernization of the platforms, including roofing.
The structure of the footbridge towers is made of stainless steel profiles, while the bridge deck itself is made of reinforced concrete. The structure is suspended and partially hung using cables. The safety of the towers is ensured by steel mesh.
Rainwater drainage is provided by gutters installed on both sides of the bridge deck, which lead to a retention tank.
This water will then be used for irrigating local greenery. The gutters are heated to prevent freezing in winter.
The main lighting system consists of LED spot elements built into the underside of the lowered handrail to prevent direct glare for pedestrians. The same type of lighting is also integrated into the staircase structure. The glazed elevator shaft is illuminated by LED spotlights installed in the ceiling part of the cabin.
