Idea projektu

Conceptual design for the building featuring an exhibition space and a multifunctional hall within the complex of the Old Orthodox Church in Sarajevo originated primarily from a careful site analysis and the desire to respect the existing historical context, while clearly articulating the distinction between the old and the new.

Popis projektu

Project idea was achieved by following the gabled roof form of the adjacent existing structure to which the new building is connected.

A portion of the building features a flat roof that evokes the silhouette of the church bell tower and is accentuated in relation to the rest of the structure. Additionally, the arched window module from the bell tower is reinterpreted and applied to the new building in a more contemporary form.

The spatial layout is designed to allow flexible use for various types of lectures and gatherings. The façade is a modern reinterpretation of the traditional stonework used on the church. Stone panels of a similar hue are planned, arranged to create an engaging rhythm and distinctive appearance of the building.

Technické informace

The building is single-storey and complies with the prescribed horizontal zoning regulations in terms of its footprint. Regarding its vertical dimensions, in the section where it adjoins the existing structure, it follows the height and form of its pitched roof, which measures 4.60 m. In the continuation of the building, the pitched roof rises to a height of 5.30 m, culminating in a corner section with a flat roof reaching a total height of 5.90 m.

The structural system of the building is designed as a reinforced concrete frame, with reinforced concrete shear walls serving as vertical load-bearing elements, and cast-in-place RC slabs as horizontal load-bearing elements. The roof structure in the pitched sections is steel, consisting of I-beams with dimensions 30 cm (height) by 30 cm (width), supported on RC columns. The secondary roof structure is composed of steel I-section ribs with dimensions of 20 cm (height) by 10 cm (width), and edge beams made of U-profiles of the same dimensions. The ribs are spaced at 1.20 m (center-to-center).

One section of the pitched roof is glazed and consists of a substructure made of horizontal and vertical steel members with cross-sectional dimensions of 6 x 5 cm, supporting double-glazed (IGU) glass panels with a thickness of 2 cm.

The portion of the building with a flat roof consists of a reinforced concrete structure with a ribbed slab. Columns are dimensioned at 30 x 30 cm, beams are 60 cm high and 30 cm wide, while the ribs measure 40 cm in height and 20 cm in width.

As for the façade, it is designed as a ventilated façade with a finish layer of natural stone panels measuring 120 x 60 x 3 cm. The assembly includes, from inside to out: the concrete wall, a vapor barrier, thermal insulation 12 cm thick, a weather barrier, a 4 cm ventilation cavity, and finally the stone cladding.
