El Quseir, historically a key phosphate mining hub, faces significant challenges due to outdated extraction techniques, inefficient storage systems, and environmental degradation. The reliance on traditional, resource-intensive methods has led to waste accumulation, ecosystem damage, and declining productivity, making mining less sustainable and economically viable. As a result, the region has experienced economic stagnation, with limited investment in modernized mining infrastructure or innovative applications of phosphate resources.
This project reclaims abandoned phosphate mines in El Quseir by transforming them into a hybrid complex that combines mineral extraction with public wellness and environmental regeneration. The intervention includes a phosphate-processing facility integrated into the mountain and a rehabilitation center featuring therapeutic hot springs infused with phosphate minerals. Public platforms, scenic pathways, and educational spaces reconnect the community with the landscape, offering both industrial functionality and cultural experience. The design revitalizes the local economy while promoting sustainable use of natural resources.
The project employs a dual-system structure: an underground phosphate extraction unit embedded within the mountain, and a surface-level rehabilitation facility composed of locally sourced stone, steel framing, and water circulation infrastructure. Hot spring platforms are constructed with layered wooden decks suspended above geothermal pools, supported by reinforced concrete foundations. Heat exchange systems redirect thermal energy from mining processes to naturally warm the spring water. Vertical shafts and conveyor belts transport phosphate, while circulation paths for visitors are separated for safety and experience design. The entire complex is designed to minimize environmental impact while maximizing public accessibility and industrial efficiency.
