LEFKOSA TRANSPORTATION HUB

Idea projektu

The project aims to establish a transportation hub in Lefkosa, the capital of Northern Cyprus. The region faces significant challenges with its public transportation system, primarily relying on
"dolmus" buses. These informal minibuses are popular but lack organization, operate without a fixed schedule, and only serve main roads, leading to traffic congestion and fluctuating fares. While taxis and university buses offer more reliable options with scheduled routes, they remain limited. To address these issues, we propose designing a transportation hub at the current terminal site in Lefkosa, which will enhance transportation accessibility for the Cypriot population.

To address the transportation challenges in this project, we propose a fleet of larger, more organized buses designed to transport more passengers at a lower cost, thereby reducing traffic congestion.
Additionally, the project includes a tramway that will connect the main cities in Northern Cyprus. This tramway will primarily operate at ground level, following the highways to link the cities. As it approaches urban areas, where road sizes become smaller, the tramway will gradually transition underground, culminating at the transportation hub. Passengers will enter and exit at this underground level, allowing them to either access the city or continue their journey on the newly introduced
buses.

Technické informace

The overall structure of the transportation hub consists of the following key elements:

Roof Structure: A reinforced concrete (RC) lattice roof supported by aluminum transoms.

Facade: A translucent polycarbonate facade that allows natural light in while minimizing heat gain, complemented by glass facades with aluminum frames at the main entrances.

Levels: Two main levels featuring:

First and Ground Floors: Constructed with reinforced concrete slabs, utilizing a waffle slab design supported by reinforced concrete columns.
Underground Level: Contains all transportation vehicles, featuring a concrete platform for pedestrians and asphalt flooring for vehicles.
Vertical Circulation: Elevator shafts that also function as load-bearing cores, providing access between levels.
