Regeneration of the Prison Castle in Danilov

Regina Khusu

Idea projektu

There are many small towns in Russia with a rich history. The simplest tool for their development is to attract tourists. What is interesting to all tourists? History, architecture and emotions.
"The Marquis de Sade wanted to break their walls, Jean Genet was touched to the point of kissing them...". The walls of prisons are inherently imbued with a strange energy, here some people went crazy and gave up their lives, and others were drawn to this poignant mysterious atmosphere.
But what if we rethink the former strict and cruel prison, change its purpose and give life a chance to emerge where until now it had only faded away? When creating the concept for the regeneration of the historical buildings of the prison castle in the city of Danilov, I was guided by this very principle.

Popis projektu

The Prison Castle complex includes 11 buildings.
Tourists and locals will be able to visit the craft street with various workshops of local architects, and on the street they will visit the market square. Anyone will have the opportunity to walk around the pond or climb to the observation decks. A restaurant, buffet and bakery will be open to everyone. And the main building of the prison castle will receive people from different cities, because there will be a guest house here.
Nevertheless, I preserve the historical stone walls of the "punishment cell", I tell about the "genius of the place" not only through paper historical references. With the help of removable installations, the play of light, shadow and colors, I give each cell its own role with its own character. Arriving here, emotions intensify and do not let go until the end. The museum space tells each guest about the most terrible details of the prison, its legends and deep history.

Technické informace

The main historical building has existed for many decades and during the design process, a decision was made to preserve it. The building is brick with reinforced concrete floors with preserved plastered walls. The original plaster has been preserved as much as possible in the project.
The outbuildings are also partially preserved, but the second floor is being renovated: the facade solutions are made of heat-treated oak wood.
The project's viewing platforms are made of 3-centimeter-thick iron plates that are attached to each other and thus support the strength of the entire structure.
The buildings of the craft workshops are classified as new construction: brick walls, concrete and wooden sheathing, concrete decorative inserts and hipped and pitched rafter roofs.
